What Is a GS1-128 Shipping Label and How It Encodes SSCCs
GS1-128 Shipping Label
Definition
A logistics or shipping label using GS1-128 barcodes to encode identifiers and supply-chain data such as an SSCC, lot, date, or routing information.
Overview
GS1-128 Shipping Label A logistics or shipping label using GS1-128 barcodes to encode identifiers and supply-chain data such as an SSCC, lot, date, or routing information. The GS1-128 format is a structured implementation of the Code 128 symbology that uses GS1 Application Identifiers (AIs) to tell systems what each data element represents — for example, an SSCC (serial shipping container code), batch/lot number, or best-before date. On a pallet, carton, or package label, the GS1-128 barcode lets automated scanners and WMS/TMS systems read multiple pieces of information reliably from a single symbol.
GS1-128 labels are widely used by manufacturers, distributors, carriers, and retailers because they carry both identification and contextual data in machine-readable form. A typical use is a pallet shipping label where the human-readable SSCC appears alongside one or more GS1-128 barcodes that encode the same SSCC and optional data such as weight, number of cartons, or shipment routing. The consistent AI structure means downstream systems know how to parse each element without custom parsing rules.
How The Barcode Encodes Data
The GS1-128 symbol is mechanically Code 128 but functionally defined by GS1's Application Identifiers. Each AI is a numeric code in parentheses when displayed human-readably; electronically the AI is embedded immediately before its data field. Common AIs used on shipping labels include the SSCC (AI 00), batch/lot (AI 10), best-before/expiration (AI 17), and net weight (AI 320x).
Scanners and software read the AI then extract the indicated data length or until the next AI. Fixed-length AIs (for example SSCC) require no separator; variable-length fields require a function-code-1 (FNC1) or explicit separator. That structure is what enables a single GS1-128 barcode to contain multiple discrete, meaningful values that WMS, ERP, and carrier systems can act upon immediately.
Why The SSCC Matters On Shipping Labels
The SSCC (Serial Shipping Container Code) is the most common identifier encoded on GS1-128 shipping labels. The SSCC is an 18-digit GS1 identifier that uniquely identifies a logistic unit — a pallet, crate, or consolidated shipment — for the life of that logistic event. Carriers use the SSCC to track inbound and outbound movement; recipients use it to confirm receipts and automate putaway.
Because the SSCC is globally unique and persistent for a shipment, it ties physical handling events to system records: ASN (advance ship notice) messages, receiving scans, and inventory transactions. It also supports cross-docking and consolidation workflows where the SSCC on the label is scanned to trigger routing logic or to validate that the contents match the manifest.
Typical Label Content
- SSCC: The 18-digit serial shipping container code (AI 00) printed and encoded in GS1-128.
- Item Or Case Identifiers: GTINs (AI 01) or internal SKUs used to describe contents.
- Batch/Lot And Dates: Lot or batch (AI 10) and best-before/expiration dates (AI 17) for traceability.
- Quantity/Weight: Number of pieces (AI 37) or gross/net weight (AI 320x/310x) for freight calculation and verification.
- Routing/Carrier Data: Carrier reference numbers or routing codes when required by the shipper or carrier.
How GS1-128 Labels Are Used Operationally
At shipment creation, a WMS or ERP assigns an SSCC and prints a GS1-128 shipping label. The label is affixed to the logistic unit — usually the pallet — and the SSCC is sent in the ASN/Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) 856 or equivalent message to the buyer or carrier. On arrival, receiving scans the GS1-128 to automatically confirm the SSCC and any encoded lot or date fields, reconcile quantities, and update inventory.
Carriers may also require GS1-128 labels for certain services or to support automated sorting. Retailers that operate high-speed receiving lines (for example grocery or big-box) commonly require GS1-128 pallet labels to ensure accurate, quick scan-based receipt and cross-dock processing.
Common Pitfalls And How To Avoid Them
- Incorrect AI Order: Putting variable-length AIs before fixed-length without proper separators can break scanners — follow GS1 rules for field order.
- Poor Print Quality: Low-contrast or smeared GS1-128 codes fail verification; use thermal-transfer printers and high-quality labels for pallet environments.
- Wrong SSCC Formatting: Missing check digit or incorrect company prefix will make the SSCC invalid — generate SSCCs from your GS1 company prefix and include the correct check digit.
- Noncompliant Label Size/Placement: Place labels where scanners expect them and size the barcode to the scanner distance used in receiving and carrier hubs.
Who Needs To Implement GS1-128 Labels
Shippers sending consolidated pallets, manufacturers shipping regulated goods (food, pharma), retailers with scan-based receiving, and 3PLs managing palletized inventory benefit most from GS1-128. Carriers and retailers often specify label content and format; check partner requirements and GS1 specifications before rollout.
In short, the GS1-128 Shipping Label is a standardized, machine-readable way to present unique shipment identifiers and critical supply-chain data on a single shipping label. When SSCCs and other AIs are generated and printed correctly, GS1-128 labels speed receiving, reduce errors, and enable automated workflows across WMS, TMS, and carrier systems.
