Header Bag

Definition

A bag with a reinforced header area, often used for hanging retail display or printed branding.

Overview

Header Bag A bag with a reinforced header area, often used for hanging retail display or printed branding. This packaging format combines a flexible body (poly, cellophane, or biodegradable film) with an integrated or added header — a thicker strip at the top that provides a hole or slot for hanging, room for printed branding, and structural support for heavier or irregularly shaped contents.

The header is the defining feature: it transfers the load of the product to the hanging hardware (pegboard hooks, slatwall hooks, or display rails) and creates a visible area for barcodes, logos, and product information. Header bags are common for small consumer goods — hardware kits, stationery, craft supplies, small electronics, and apparel accessories — where countertop or peg displays are the primary retail fixture.

What The Header Typically Is

The header can be produced several ways: heat-sealed film thickening, an additional laminated card top (paper or plastic), or a folded-over film with reinforcement tape. Typical header features include a round hang hole, an euro-slot (or euro-hole), a tear-off perforation, and an area sized for a printed coupon, UPC, or branding band. Materials vary by application: heavyweight films for moisture resistance, cardstock for premium retail presentation, or recyclable/compostable films where sustainability is required.

Why Headers Matter In Retail

Headers solve three practical problems at once: secure hanging, shelf/peg visibility, and branding real estate. They let store teams convert shelf space into vertical pegboard displays quickly, increase product facings per linear foot of wall, and provide a stable carrier for fragile items that would otherwise slip or sag in a plain bag. For omnichannel sellers, printed headers can carry SKU barcodes or retail partner labels to reduce repacking at distribution centers.

How Header Bags Vary

  • Material: Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and oriented polypropylene (OPP) are common; biodegradable films and recycled-content films are growing options.
  • Header Type: Integrated film header (sealed/formed), laminated cardstock header, or adhesive/reinforced tape header.
  • Hang Feature: Round hole, euro-slot, or combination holes; some headers include tear-off coupons or perforated sections.
  • Printing: Full-color flexographic, spot-color, or blank; coatings (matte/gloss) affect scannability and aesthetics.

Who Uses Header Bags And Who Pays

Retailers, private-label manufacturers, contract packagers, and 3PLs commonly use header bags. The party that pays depends on the commercial arrangement: a brand owner ordering printed headers usually absorbs tooling and print setup costs; a retailer providing store-specified headers may supply blanks to the vendor; contract packagers may include header application in per-piece packaging fees. For small runs, brands may choose generic clear header bags to avoid print plate charges.

Practical Example From A Warehouse Perspective

Imagine a home-goods merchant launching a line of adhesive hooks sold as a three-pack. The SKU fits a 6" x 8" poly bag with a 1.5" laminated cardstock header printed with the logo and UPC. The retailer requires a euro-slot. The merchant orders 10,000 produced bags with pre-applied hang holes; the vendor ships to a 3PL for fulfillment. At the 3PL, the header design speeds shelf-ready displays and eliminates secondary packing at inbound retail DCs.

Tips For Selecting Header Bags

  • Choose The Right Hole: Match the hang feature to retailer fixtures (euro-slot for European-style pegs, round hole for standard peg hooks).
  • Test Weight Capacity: Verify the header and hole can support the product weight with a safety margin — a header rated for 3x product weight reduces returns from ripped headers.
  • Consider Scannability: Reserve a clear, low-gloss area for barcode placement to avoid read errors at checkout.
  • Plan For Sustainability: If retailer programs require recyclable packaging, select mono-material headers or recyclable film + recyclable cardstock combinations and confirm local recycling compatibility.

In short, the Header Bag is a practical, low-cost packaging solution that combines hanging capability with branding space. For merchants and warehouse operators, selecting the right header material, hole type, and print strategy reduces damage, improves in-store presentation, and simplifies downstream handling and scanning.
