Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) use location types to group storage and operational spots by function rather than by a single physical coordinate. Rather than treating every bin or slot as identical, the WMS assigns a type—like receiving, reserve, pick face, packing, staging, dock, or returns—which determines the rules, permitted activities, routing, and performance metrics that apply there. This functional layer lets managers enforce workflows, optimize inventory placement, and align picking and replenishment with business priorities.


What Location Types Typically Cover


  • Function: The primary activity allowed at the location (e.g., picking vs. receiving).
  • Storage Characteristics: Constraints such as temperature control, stack height, and pallet or case-only restrictions.
  • Inventory Rules: Available SKUs, lot or serial handling, FIFO/LIFO requirements.

Location types turn raw warehouse geography into actionable policy. A WMS that recognizes a pick-face location will route pick tasks there first and trigger replenishment from reserve locations when stock dips below a threshold. Receiving location types capture inbound tolerance checks and putaway rules, while packing locations can enforce packing material checks and shipping label generation. Without types, every task would need custom routing logic, raising error rates and slowing throughput.


How Location Types Vary Between Operations


Different facilities and software vendors implement types differently. Some WMS platforms provide a fixed set of types with configurable attributes; others allow fully customizable types with user-defined rule sets. Variation typically occurs in the granularity (broad types like "storage" vs. narrow types like "temperature-controlled short-term staging") and how types interact with other modules like labor management, slotting, and transport planning.


Who Configures And Uses Location Types


Configuration is usually done by warehouse operations managers, WMS administrators, or implementation consultants during setup or after process redesign. Daily users—pickers, putaway associates, supervisors, and planners—experience types indirectly through task queues, pick paths, and system prompts. IT and integration teams also rely on stable type definitions when mapping ERP location attributes to WMS fields.


Practical Example: From Receiving To Shipping


Consider an incoming pallet of seasonal apparel. The WMS assigns the inbound pallet to a receiving location type where QC and ASN matching occur. Once accepted, the system routes the pallet to a reserve location (reserve type) if it won’t go directly to the pick face. When replenishment triggers, quantity moves to pick face locations (pick face type) arranged for fast single-SKU picks. Items destined for an outgoing order are moved to packing locations (packing type) and then to staging locations (staging type) for final consolidation at the dock (dock type). Returns follow a returns location type that enforces inspection, disposition, and potential restock or quarantine steps.


Configuration Best Practices


  • Keep Types Logical: Model types around common operational flows so staff intuitively understand tasks.
  • Limit Initial Complexity: Start with a pragmatic set of types (receiving, reserve, pick face, packing, staging, dock, returns) and expand as needed.
  • Map Attributes: Define capacity, handling rules, and SKU restrictions at the type level to prevent operational errors.
  • Integrate With Slotting: Align location types with slotting policies so fast movers are in pick-face types and slow movers in reserve types.
  • Test With Scenarios: Run putaway, replenishment, and wave tests before full deployment to validate rules.


Common Pitfalls To Avoid


Two frequent mistakes are over-proliferation of types—making the system hard to maintain—and under-defining types, which leaves critical behaviors ambiguous. Another is not tying location types into labor planning and task batching: if the WMS knows a location is a packing type but the labor system doesn't, workloads may skew and service levels can suffer.


In short, the Location Type is a compact but powerful WMS concept that packages physical locations with operational rules. Thoughtful design of location types cuts errors, shortens travel time, and makes replenishment and picking predictable.
