Pickup Point is a designated location where customers can collect orders instead of receiving home delivery. This model shifts the last-mile handoff from a doorstep to a controlled location — retail counter, parcel locker, carrier storefront, or a centralized collection hub — and changes how orders are routed, stored, and released to customers.


Pickup points reduce failed delivery attempts, concentrate foot traffic for consolidated handoffs, and provide an alternative for customers who prefer to pick up on their schedule. In the United States they appear in many forms across urban, suburban, and rural networks and are commonly integrated with retailer systems and carrier networks.


Common Pickup Point Types


  • In-Store Pickup: Customers collect orders at a retail counter or dedicated click-and-collect desk inside a store; inventory may be drawn from store stock or shipped from a fulfillment center.
  • Parcel Lockers: Automated lockers located in malls, transit stations, or neighborhood hubs; customers receive a code to open a compartment and retrieve their parcel.
  • Carrier Drop-Off Points: Carrier-owned locations such as UPS Stores, FedEx Access Points, or USPS retail units where parcels are held for pickup.
  • Collection Hubs: Third-party micro-fulfillment centers or lockers managed by a 3PL that consolidate parcels from multiple shippers for local pickup.
  • Curbside/Designated Pickup Bays: Pre-arranged exterior pickup lanes where staff bring orders to a waiting customer, often used for grocery and bulky goods.


Why Pickup Points Matter


Pickup points matter because they address several persistent last-mile pain points. They lower delivery costs per parcel by consolidating stops and reduce failed-delivery labor and re-delivery fees. For customers, they can offer faster collection windows (same-day or scheduled slots) and more privacy or convenience when home delivery is impractical.


From an environmental perspective, consolidated pickups reduce vehicle miles traveled by avoiding multiple doorstep stops. For merchants and carriers, pickup points can improve routing efficiency and provide predictable handoff times that simplify workforce planning and dock utilization.


How Pickup Points Operate


The operational flow typically follows these steps: the customer selects a pickup point at checkout; the merchant or fulfillment partner routes the parcel to that location; the pickup point receives and logs the parcel; the customer receives a notification with collection instructions; and the pickup agent verifies identity and releases the parcel. Systems integrations (OMS, WMS, carrier APIs) are central to smooth execution.


Security, identification, and time windows vary by type. Lockers use OTP codes and expiration timers. Retail counters rely on ID checks and order numbers. Carriers may require signature capture for higher-value items. Hold periods are normally defined in the service level — common windows are 3–14 days depending on the provider.

  • Hours and Access: Some points operate 24/7 (lockers), others match retail hours, and some require appointment slots.
  • Security Level: Parcel lockers provide tamper-resistant storage; staffed locations can verify ID and signatures.
  • Item Size and Temperature: Not all points accept oversized or temperature-controlled goods; refrigerated or frozen items need specialized pickup locations.
  • Fees and SLAs: Carriers or merchants may charge for extended holds or same-day pickup; SLA defines time to availability after shipment arrival.

Pickup points are used by a wide range of operators: omnichannel retailers offering click-and-collect, pure-play e-commerce merchants reducing last-mile costs, carriers expanding network density, 3PLs offering consolidated collection services, and marketplaces enabling convenience options for customers. They are particularly common in urban areas with apartment dwellers and customers who value speed and flexibility.

A mid-sized e-commerce apparel retailer implemented a locker network at transit hubs and a click-and-collect option at partner boutiques. After integrating locker API callbacks with their OMS, average last-mile cost fell by 18% and the failed-delivery rate dropped 72%. Customers reported faster collection times for city orders, and the retailer reduced same-day dispatch pressure by batching deliveries to lockers and retail partners.
