What Is A Sellable Unit? Retail Definition And Examples
Sellable Unit
Definition
A unit or pack configuration intended to be sold as a distinct item.
Overview
Sellable Unit A unit or pack configuration intended to be sold as a distinct item. In retail and distribution this refers to the physical configuration—an "each," an inner pack, a multipack, or a shelf-ready carton—that a store or online channel presents to the end customer and scans at point of sale.
Sellable units are the bridge between product design, barcoding, and how inventory is handled in warehouses and on retail shelves. A single SKU may support multiple sellable units (for example, a 12-pack case and individual bottles), and each sellable unit usually requires its own barcode or GTIN to support accurate scanning, inventory tracking, and pricing.
What A Sellable Unit Typically Covers
- Physical format: The package type customers buy—single item (“each”), multipack, blister pack, or shelf-ready carton.
- Identification: A unique product identifier (UPC/GTIN) printed on or applied to the sellable unit for POS scanning and inventory systems.
- Labeling: Required consumer information, brand artwork, and regulatory labeling that must appear on the retail-facing pack.
- Unit of measure: The sales unit used in commerce and reporting (each, pack, weight, etc.).
Why It Matters For Retailers And Warehouses
Accurate definition of the sellable unit drives receiving, putaway, replenishment, picking, and invoicing. If a warehouse treats a case as the sellable unit when the retailer sells the each, pick accuracy and inventory visibility suffer. Systems such as WMS and POS rely on consistent sellable unit definitions to translate physical moves into financial and inventory records.
How Sellable Units Are Identified In Practice
Most retailers and manufacturers use GS1 GTINs (UPC/EAN) to identify sellable units. The GTIN is assigned to the exact product configuration that the consumer buys. For multipacks or promotional bundles, a separate GTIN should be issued so point-of-sale and inventory counts are correct.
Common Operational Impacts
- Receiving: Receiving paperwork and inspection must match the sold configuration, otherwise unit conversions are required at the dock.
- Storage: Storage locations and bin sizes are planned around the sellable unit dimensions, not only pallet case configurations.
- Replenishment: Replenishment thresholds and pick-face quantities should be set to the sellable unit to avoid stockouts on the shelf.
- Point-of-sale: POS pricing and promotions attach to the sellable unit GTIN; incorrect mapping causes mismatches at checkout.
Practical Example
A beverage brand ships its product in cases of 24 bottles (case GTIN). Retailers often sell individual bottles (each GTIN) and sometimes offer a 6-pack multipack (a separate GTIN). At the DC, cases may be stored on pallets, but the WMS must know the relationship between pallet-case-each so it can convert a case pick to 24 sellable units if the retailer orders individual bottles.
Tips For Implementing Correct Sellable Unit Handling
- Standardize identifiers: Assign a GTIN to every sellable configuration and record pack hierarchy (each → inner pack → case → pallet) in the WMS.
- Document conversions: Maintain explicit unit-conversion rules (e.g., 1 case = 12 each) so shipping, invoicing, and inventory counts align.
- Align packaging and labeling: Ensure consumer-facing packs carry the correct barcode and regulatory copy for the market they’re sold in.
- Map to retail channels: Different channels may require different sellable units (subscription boxes vs. big-box stores); capture channel rules in order management.
In short, the Sellable Unit is the exact pack configuration the customer purchases; defining and managing it consistently across GTINs, WMS, and POS prevents inventory errors, improves replenishment accuracy, and keeps pricing and promotions aligned with what the customer actually buys.
