Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC)

Definition

An 18-digit GS1 identifier used to uniquely identify a logistic unit such as a pallet, case, or parcel.

Overview

Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC) An 18-digit GS1 identifier used to uniquely identify a logistic unit such as a pallet, case, or parcel. The SSCC provides a globally unique serial number for a single physical logistic unit and is intended for use across the supply chain to track, reference, and manage that unit from origin to destination.

The SSCC is not a product identifier — it identifies the shipment container or logistic unit itself. You will see it encoded in a GS1-128 barcode on pallet and case labels, and transmitted in electronic messages such as advance ship notices (ASNs). Because the SSCC is unique and assigned for a single logistic movement, it supports traceability, cross-docking, returns processing, and event-level visibility in transportation and warehouse systems.

How The SSCC Is Structured

The SSCC is always 18 numeric digits. It is composed so that the combination of elements guarantees global uniqueness when issued correctly:

  • Extension Digit: One digit used by the issuer to increase the capacity of the serial reference (can be 0–9).
  • GS1 Company Prefix: A variable-length identifier assigned by GS1 that identifies the company issuing the SSCC (typically 7–10 digits depending on prefix length).
  • Serial Reference: A numeric series assigned by the company to make the value unique within the company prefix and extension digit. Its length varies so the whole SSCC is 17 digits before the check digit.
  • Check Digit: One final digit calculated with the GS1 modulo 10 algorithm to validate the complete 18-digit number.

What The SSCC Typically Covers

  • Unique Logistic Unit ID: One SSCC per pallet, case, or parcel to track precisely that physical unit.
  • Temporary But Traceable: Assigned for a specific shipment or logistic event; it may be retired after delivery but remains a record in systems.
  • Encoded In Barcodes And EDI: Usually encoded in a GS1-128 barcode with Application Identifier (00) and carried in ASNs and event messages.

Why The SSCC Matters To Warehouses And Carriers

With a single, globally-unique SSCC, a warehouse can scan and reconcile inbound pallets against the ASN, record putaway against a specific pallet, and reference that pallet in cross-dock flows or returns. Carriers use SSCCs to match manifests, tote movements, and proof-of-delivery records. For 3PLs and retailers, SSCCs reduce manual matching, speed receiving, and improve visibility during transit.

How To Assign And Manage SSCCs

Companies need a GS1 Company Prefix to build SSCCs. The general steps are:

  • Obtain A Company Prefix: Register with your local GS1 organisation and receive your GS1 company prefix.
  • Define Serial Policies: Decide your serial reference scheme (sequential, block allocation, or event-driven) and how you will use the extension digit.
  • Calculate Check Digits: Use the GS1 modulo 10 algorithm to calculate the final digit for each SSCC before printing or transmitting.
  • Record Issuance: Keep a ledger or WMS-controlled table of issued SSCCs to avoid duplication and to support audit and traceability.

Common Operational Examples

When a shipping dock stages five outgoing pallets, each pallet receives its own SSCC. The warehouse prints GS1-128 labels with the (00) SSCC and applies them to each pallet. The ASN sent to the customer or retailer includes the SSCC for each pallet, enabling the receiver to scan and confirm quantities at pallet level during receiving.

Best Practices And Pitfalls

  • Labeling: Place a GS1-128 label containing AI (00) and the 18-digit SSCC on a consistent location of the pallet or case for fast scanning.
  • Avoid Reuse: Do not reuse SSCCs for different physical shipments — each logistic unit must be uniquely identified for its lifecycle.
  • Integrate Systems: Ensure WMS/TMS and ERP maintain SSCC issuance and status (issued, in-transit, received, archived) to prevent duplication and data gaps.

In short, the Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC) is a simple but powerful 18-digit identifier that enables unique identification and tracking of pallet-, case-, or parcel-level logistic units across systems and trading partners.
