Shipment events are the raw signals carriers, scanners, and logistics systems generate as a parcel moves through the supply chain. They range from automated barcode scans at a sort facility to manual status notes added by a driver. For logistics teams, each event adds context — timestamps, checkpoint locations, device IDs, and short status codes — that lets operations, customer service, and merchants understand progress and react to problems.
Common Shipment Event Types
- Pickup: Carrier picks up a shipment from the shipper or origin facility.
- Accepted At Facility: Shipment scanned at a regional sort or hub.
- In Transit: Movement between facilities or on a transport leg.

Events also form the evidence for claims and audits: timestamps and scans prove carrier handling and timing.
How Shipment Events Are Generated
Events originate from several sources: carrier handheld scanners, RFID readers, telematics on vehicles, customs systems, and manual entries by staff. They are transmitted via carrier APIs, EDI messages, or batch files to a shipper's TMS/WMS or a third-party tracking platform. Each event typically includes at minimum a timestamp, location, status code, and a reference like an airway bill or tracking number.
How Shipment Events Vary By Carrier And Mode
Modes (air, ocean, road, rail) and carrier maturity affect event frequency and granularity. Express couriers provide many micro-checkpoints and delivery confirmations; ocean carriers often provide fewer events concentrated around port calls; LTL carriers may report status at terminal gates. Cross-border shipments add customs-related events. Integrations must account for these differences when presenting a consistent tracking timeline.

Events show "Accepted At Facility" at 02:00, "In Transit" at 08:15, then an "Exception: Delay" at 14:30 due to incorrect paperwork. The warehouse uses that exception event to push a hold on the expected receiving slot and notifies purchasing to check paperwork — avoiding labor idle time and preventing a misrouted unload.
Tips For Working With Shipment Events
- Normalize Codes: Map carrier-specific status codes to a standard set in your WMS/TMS for consistent automation.
- Prioritize Reliability: Prefer carrier push APIs to periodic polling where possible for lower latency.
- Handle Duplicates: Implement de-duplication logic; multiple scans from the same checkpoint are common.
- Implement Alerting: Trigger exceptions and SLA breaches from event patterns, not single missing events.
- Keep Raw Data: Store original event payloads for audits and claims investigations.
