Retailers, brand merchandisers, and planners use a size curve to translate demand signals into purchase quantities for each size, align inventory with expected sales, and reduce both stockouts and overstocks.
At its core a size curve is a planning tool: a percentage or ratio that allocates total unit buys across the size run for a style (for example XS–XXL or 28–40 waist). It sits between demand forecasting and ordering — after you forecast total units, you apply the size curve to determine how many of each size to buy or produce. That single step has outsized operational effects across buying, replenishment, pick-and-pack, and returns handling.

A well-calibrated size curve improves sell-through and reduces markdowns. When your mix matches customer fit preferences you:
