Overview
SKU is a stock keeping unit used to identify and manage a specific product or variant. In retail operations a SKU is an internal identifier — usually alphanumeric — that maps to a distinct item in inventory (for example: blue, size M cotton tee versus the same tee in red, size L). SKUs are central to inventory accuracy, picking, replenishment and sales reporting across stores, warehouses and ecommerce channels.
Retailers, warehouse operators and 3PLs rely on SKU-level detail to run cycle counts, forecast demand by variant, allocate stock between channels and reconcile physical inventory with accounting records. A clear, consistent SKU scheme reduces errors at the dock, speeds fulfillment, and supports analytics such as sell-through by style, season, or supplier.

SKU assignment is usually owned by merchandising or inventory control in a retailer, with rules documented in a SKU governance policy. For multi-channel sellers, the policy should specify who can create SKUs, required attributes, naming conventions, and lifecycle actions (retire, merge, split).
- Creation Authority: Which role can create a new SKU and in which system (ERP, PIM, WMS).
- Required Fields: Mandatory attributes such as product family, supplier, UOM and dimensions.

Practical Example: Apparel SKU
A retailer sells a cotton tee in three colors and four sizes. Instead of one generic product code, each color/size becomes a separate SKU so inventory, returns and sales can be tracked precisely. A possible SKU format is TEE-CTN-BLU-M (product-family, fabric, color, size). Barcodes linked to the SKU are printed on the pack to speed receiving and POS scanning.

- Over-Segmentation: Creating SKUs for trivial differences increases complexity and carrying costs; rationalize SKUs periodically.
- Poor Naming Conventions: Inconsistent formats make manual lookup error-prone; document rules and enforce them with validations.
- Missing Master Data: SKUs without dimensions or weight cause shipping and storage errors; require complete master data at creation.
