Definition

A flat sheet used under a load or between layers to support handling, pallet replacement, or load separation.

Overview

Slip Sheet A thin sheet used instead of or with a pallet to support and move unitized loads. Slip sheets combine a low-profile platform with specific load-handling techniques so goods can be moved, stored, and shipped without the bulk of a conventional pallet.


Slip sheets are typically made from corrugated fiberboard, solid fiberboard, plastic (PVC, HDPE), or laminated materials. They sit under a unitized stack of cartons, bags, or products; a forklift or specialized push-pull attachment engages the sheet rather than lifting a pallet. Because the sheet is thin, slip-sheeted loads have a lower tare weight and reduced stacked height compared with palletized loads — a practical advantage for space utilization and freight cost.


Common Slip Sheet Types

Slip sheets vary by material and design to match load type and handling equipment.


  • Fiberboard: Cost-effective, recyclable options for dry goods and one-way shipments.
  • Plastic: Durable, moisture-resistant sheets ideal for wet environments or reusable cycles.
  • Laminated/Composite: Combines strength and moisture resistance for heavier or mixed loads.
  • Perforated Or Molded Designs: Allow gripping by push-pull attachments or vacuum systems.


How Slip Sheets Work In Operations

Most operations use slip sheets with one of two handling methods: push-pull attachments on forklifts or specialized slip-sheet trucks. With push-pull, the attachment grips the sheet and pulls the load onto the forklift platform; with slip-sheet trucks, a blade slides under the sheet and then lifts. Because the load isn’t lifted by a pallet, careful unitization (banding, stretch-wrap) is essential to maintain load integrity during movement.


Why Warehouses Use Slip Sheets

Warehouses and carriers select slip sheets for measurable operational benefits.


  • Space Savings: Lower load height and no pallet overhang increase storage density and container cube utilization.
  • Cost Reduction: Cheaper material per unit and less freight cost due to reduced weight and volume.
  • Sustainability: Less wood use and fewer pallets to repair or replace reduces waste and carbon footprint.
  • One-Way Shipping: Eliminates the need to retrieve pallets after delivery in many supply chains.


When Slip Sheets Are Not Appropriate

Slip sheets are not a universal replacement for pallets. Heavy, unstable, or pallet-required goods (e.g., containers requiring forklift forks insertion, or goods that must meet ISPM 15 regulations for wooden pallets) may still require pallets. Handling infrastructure is also a factor: locations without push-pull attachments or trained operators will struggle with slip-sheeted loads.


Practical Example

A beverage distributor switches to plastic slip sheets for pallet loads of canned drinks when shipping to dense urban retailers. By replacing wooden pallets and reducing stack height by 2 inches per pallet, they fit extra cases per truckload, lowering transportation cost per case. They equipped inbound forklifts with push-pull attachments and adjusted stretch-wrap patterns to maintain load stability.


Implementation Tips

  • Pilot Small: Start with a single SKU and route to validate handling procedures before scaling.
  • Train Operators: Teach push-pull operation, sheet placement, and unitization methods to avoid load slips and product damage.
  • Standardize Sheet Specs: Choose sheet dimensions, strength, and material to match your most common load sizes and pallet footprint.
  • Coordinate With Carriers: Ensure receiving facilities can handle slip-sheeted loads or supply pallet exchange procedures when needed.
