Unique Formula Identifier (UFI)

Definition

A code linking an in-scope hazardous mixture to its poison-centre notification and composition information.

Overview

Unique Formula Identifier (UFI) "A code linking an in-scope hazardous mixture to its poison-centre notification and composition information." The UFI is a machine‑readable reference used to connect a single hazardous mixture formulation to the detailed composition and exposure data that a manufacturer, importer, or authorised representative submits to poison centres.

Retailers encounter UFIs when they stock or sell mixtures that are classified for health or physical hazards and that fall under regional poison‑centre notification rules. The UFI itself does not replace the label, safety data sheet, barcode or product name; it is a cross‑reference that lets a poison centre rapidly retrieve the precise formulation linked to an incident call.

What The UFI Actually Links

The UFI links three things: the product on the shelf, the poison‑centre notification (PCN) record, and the submitted composition/exposure information. When an exposure occurs, a caller or clinician can provide the UFI shown on the product, and the poison centre uses that code to find the PCN file containing hazard and treatment information.

Why Retailers See UFIs On Products

Retailers see UFIs on packaging for two practical reasons: first, the UFI is required by specific regional legislation for certain mixtures placed on those markets; second, having the UFI on the label shortens response time during accidental exposures. For retailers selling into regulated markets, the UFI helps ensure consumers and first‑responders get the right information about a particular batch or formulation.

Who Creates And Owns The UFI

Manufacturers, importers, or their authorised representatives generate and assign the UFI to a specific formulation. The entity responsible for the product’s compliance on the market must also submit the full poison‑centre notification that the UFI links to. Retailers themselves rarely generate UFIs unless they manufacture or re‑label mixtures; their main responsibility is to ensure the UFI supplied by the brand or supplier appears on packaging and matches the product in stock.

How The UFI Is Used In The Supply Chain

  • Label Cross‑Reference: The UFI printed on the product or its packaging points to the PCN file for emergency use.
  • Inventory Management: Retailers can store the UFI in their product master data to link SKU records to compliance files from suppliers.
  • Returns And Incidents: Including the UFI in incident reports or returns speeds up investigation and supplier follow‑up.

Practical Example For A Retailer

A supermarket receives a new branded drain cleaner. The supplier provides product literature including a UFI. The store’s product team records the UFI in the product database and checks that the UFI printed on the bottle matches the supplier’s documentation. If a customer reports accidental ingestion, staff can read the UFI to emergency services or a poison centre so clinicians access the exact composition quickly.

How It Differs From Other Identifiers

The UFI is not a trade identifier. It does not replace GTINs (barcodes), product names, batch numbers, or CAS numbers. Instead it is a regulatory cross‑reference focused narrowly on linking a formulation to its PCN dossier. Retailers should keep these identifiers together in product records so each serves its intended operational or regulatory purpose.

Tips For Retail Operations

  • Record It: Add the UFI to the SKU record in the WMS or ERP to link stock to compliance documents.
  • Verify Packaging: Check that supplier‑provided UFIs appear on the product exactly as supplied; mismatches are a red flag.
  • Train Staff: Teach floor and customer‑service teams that the UFI is an emergency cross‑reference for poison centres, not a barcode for checkout.

In short, the Unique Formula Identifier (UFI) "A code linking an in-scope hazardous mixture to its poison-centre notification and composition information." For retailers the UFI is a compact compliance and safety tool: include it in product records, confirm it appears on packaging, and use it during any exposure or quality incident to accelerate access to the mixture’s PCN data.
