Available-to-Promise is inventory visibility that shows what quantity can be promised for future customer orders. It combines current on-hand inventory, committed quantities, incoming receipts, and allocation rules to answer the question: how many units can we commit to new orders for a given delivery date?
ATP is a decision-making layer used by sales, customer service, and order management systems to make reliable delivery promises. For eCommerce operations the metric sits between raw stock counts and customer-facing delivery dates — it translates multiple supply-side signals into a usable commitment. A robust ATP calculation reduces overselling, improves customer experience, and drives better fulfillment efficiency.
How ATP Typically Works
ATP takes inputs from several operational sources and applies business rules to compute quantities available for promise on specific dates. Typical inputs include on-hand inventory at each location, confirmed inbound receipts (purchase orders, transfers), allocated stock for pending orders, planned production, and safety stock settings. The system then projects future availability through the requested ship or delivery date and subtracts known commitments to produce the ATP quantity.
Common Data Sources And Integrations
- WMS Inventory: Location-level on-hand counts and reservations from the warehouse management system.
- ERP/Purchase Orders: Confirmed incoming receipts and expected arrival dates from procurement.
- Order Management System: Existing customer orders, allocations, and cancellations.
- Transportation/Lead Times: Cutoff times and transit days used to convert an ATP date into required ship dates.
- Production Schedules: Planned manufacturing output for made-to-stock items.
Why ATP Matters For eCommerce
For online merchants ATP affects conversion and customer satisfaction directly. Accurate ATP lets product pages show trustworthy delivery estimates and enables sales and customer service to accept orders without manual inventory checks. For omnichannel retailers ATP prevents double-selling between storefront, marketplace, and warehouse channels by reflecting commitments across systems. It also reduces expedited freight costs caused by last-minute stockouts or incorrect promises.
Key Constraints And Caveats
- Data Latency: ATP is only as accurate as the timeliness of inventory and inbound receipt updates.
- Allocation Rules: First-available, FIFO, or priority allocations change which customer orders a unit is committed to.
- Lead-Time Uncertainty: Variability in supplier lead times or transit can skew ATP projections for dates several weeks out.
- Safety Stock: Excessive or missing safety stock settings will under- or overstate ATP.
Practical Example
Imagine a single SKU with 100 units on hand, 30 units already committed to pending orders, and 200 units incoming next week. If a new order requests 50 units for delivery tomorrow and the warehouse lead time requires shipping today to meet that date, ATP for tomorrow equals 70 (100 on hand − 30 committed). The incoming 200 units don’t affect tomorrow’s ATP because they arrive after the required ship date. If the same customer requested delivery two weeks out, ATP would include the incoming 200 and yield 270 (100 − 30 + 200).
Measurement And KPIs

- Shorten Update Cycles: Automate near-real-time inventory and inbound update feeds from WMS and suppliers.
- Define Clear Allocation Rules: Make allocation policies explicit and consistent across channels.
- Use Conservative Lead Times: Build contingency into ATP calculations where supplier variability is high.
