For third-party logistics (3PL) providers, QC scopes and financial responsibility should be agreed in the service contract. Retailers often reserve the right to audit supplier QC documentation and to hold goods if nonconforming.


Practical Example: Receiving A New SKU


When a warehouse receives a new makeup line, the receiving QC should verify packaging against the purchase order and master sample: confirm carton counts, inspect seals and shrink-wrap, scan UPC/GTIN barcodes, and sample products for cap fit, filler level, label accuracy, and readable lot codes. Any discrepancy triggers a quarantine, immediate notification to the vendor, and a documented hold until disposition (accept, return, rework) is decided.


  • Quarantine: Nonconforming cartons are moved to a marked area and recorded in the inventory system.
