Edge Board

Definition

A rigid angle board placed along pallet or carton edges to improve stacking strength and protect corners.

Overview

Edge Board A rigid angle board placed along pallet or carton edges to improve stacking strength and protect corners.

Edge board (also called edge protector or angle board) is a structural packaging component manufactured from layered kraft paper, corrugated fibreboard, laminated board, or plastic. Installed on the vertical corners or edges of cartons and pallet loads, it disperses strap tension, supports stacked weight, and prevents strap or fork damage at vulnerable edges. In warehouses and shipping operations edge board is a low-cost, high-impact protector used with strapping, stretch film, and slip sheets to preserve load integrity during handling and transport.

What Edge Board Covers

Edge board addresses two primary risks: compression from vertical stacks and point damage from strapping or handling equipment. When applied along the top and/or side edges of a carton or palletized load, it increases column strength and reduces localized crushing. It also forms a sacrificial barrier where steel or plastic strapping contacts the load, preventing strap cutting into product packaging or exposed goods.

  • Compression protection: Edge board spreads compressive loads over a larger area, reducing crushed corners on top-tier cartons.
  • Strap interface: It prevents strapping from slicing into cartons or products.
  • Forklift and pallet impact: Edge board shields carton corners from forklift tines and pallet edges during movement.

Why Edge Board Matters In Distribution

In high-volume distribution and 3PL operations even a small reduction in damaged units can justify edge board costs. Damage that edge board prevents includes crushed corners leading to rejected shipments, compromised product displays, and returns processing. For export shipments subjected to multiple loadings, weather exposure, and long transit times, edge board improves the odds that goods arrive saleable—reducing loss, chargebacks, and customer complaints.

How Edge Board Varies

Manufacturers produce a range of edge board styles to match load profiles. Key variables are material, thickness (caliper), profile angle, length, and whether the board is continuous or perforated for easy sizing. Typical options include single-wall and multiwall kraft laminated edge boards, double-flanged profiles for higher loads, and plastic extrusion edge protectors for reusable applications or environments with high moisture.

  • Material: Paper-based kraft is recyclable and economical; plastic offers moisture resistance and reusability.
  • Flange size: Narrow flanges for small cartons; wide flanges for large pallets and deep corners.
  • Caliper (thickness): Thicker, laminated boards resist crushing under heavy stack loads.

Who Uses Edge Board And Who Pays

Manufacturers, e-commerce merchants, 3PLs, and freight forwarders commonly specify edge board for outbound shipments. Responsibility for supplying and paying for edge board depends on contractual terms: manufacturers or shippers typically include it in packaging costs, while some 3PLs or carriers may supply it as a value-added service for a fee. For returnable packaging programs, customers sometimes invest in plastic edge protectors that remain in the packaging loop.

Practical Example

A mid-size electronics distributor palletizes 48 cartons per pallet and straps the load with two steel straps. Previously, the top-tier cartons showed corner crushing and strap cut-through after long-haul truck transport. By adding 4" x 4" laminated kraft edge boards at each vertical edge and a top cap, and switching to polyester strapping, the warehouse reduced corner damage by 80% and cut rework costs associated with repacking and product inspection.

Selection And Handling Tips

  • Match strength to stack height: Calculate expected vertical stack loads (warehouse + in-transit) and choose caliper/flange width accordingly.
  • Use with adequate strapping tension: Edge board must be sized to prevent strap sink; excessive tension can still crush unsupported board.
  • Consider moisture exposure: For open-deck shipping or humid environments, choose plastic or waxed/laminated paper edge board to avoid softening.
  • Optimize placement: Place edge board at all strap contact points and along exterior carton corners most likely to take impact.
  • Design for automation: If using automated strapping, verify edge board profiles feed reliably; perforated or scored types work best for hand-sizing.

In short, the Edge Board is a compact, cost-effective way to increase stacking strength and protect pallet and carton corners. Choosing the right material, flange size, and placement—matched to stack loads and handling equipment—delivers measurable reductions in damage, fewer returns, and smoother warehouse operations.
