What Is FBA Polybagging And When Is It Required?
FBA Polybagging
Definition
Polybagging products to meet Amazon FBA requirements for loose, textile, liquid, or exposed items.
Overview
FBA Polybagging refers to polybagging products to meet Amazon FBA requirements for loose, textile, liquid, or exposed items. Sellers and warehouse operators use clear plastic polybags to protect individual units from contamination, tangling, leaking, or damage while they sit in the distribution network and during fulfillment center handling.
Amazon sets specific requirements for when a product must be polybagged before it can be received into Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA). The rule set is not subjective: items that can soil, tangle, or leak, or items that are sold as loose pieces (for example, small parts or components), generally need an enclosed polybag. The requirement improves customer experience and reduces return and damage rates for inventory stored and shipped through Amazon facilities.
When Amazon Requires Polybags
Amazon's FBA policy lists categories and item conditions that commonly trigger a polybag requirement. Typical cases include:
- Loose Items: Small or multiple-piece items sold without packaging that could scatter or be treated as single units.
- Textiles: Clothing, fabric accessories, and soft goods that could be soiled or snagged.
- Exposed Surfaces: Products with exposed foam, adhesives, or inner components that should not contact other units.
- Liquids Or Semi-Liquids: Items that might leak or emit residue during transit or storage.
Amazon sometimes enforces polybagging for items that arrive with packaging that can easily open or where the barcode is not scannable without additional protection.
Polybag Specifications And Labeling
Polybags used for FBA must meet size, thickness, and labeling rules. Bags must be strong enough to not tear during normal handling and should fully enclose the unit. Minimum thickness requirements are often stated in mils (thousandths of an inch) and vary by product risk; common practice is 1.5–3 mil for small items and thicker for heavier or sharp-edged goods.
Amazon also mandates suffocation warnings on polybags above a certain size, and barcode visibility. If the FNSKU or UPC can't be scanned through the bag, a barcode label must be affixed to the outside. For apparel, keep tags and labels visible or include a secondary label on the bag with the product identifier.
Exceptions And Alternatives
Not every textile or small item needs a polybag. Items that arrive in sealed manufacturer packaging that meets Amazon's packaging standards may be exempt. Rigid packaging, clamshells, blister packs, and sealed boxes that prevent damage and protect barcodes typically satisfy the requirement without an additional polybag.
Who Is Responsible For Polybagging
Sellers can choose to polybag before shipping inventory to Amazon or pay Amazon's FBA Prep service to apply polybags on receipt. Merchants also contract 3PLs and packagers to polybag and label units before they reach Amazon. Responsibility is defined by the shipment plan: if the ship-from location is the seller or a third party, ensure whoever ships units understands packaging requirements.
Practical Example
A merchant selling knit hats packs each hat in a clear polybag with a 2 mil thickness and includes a suffocation warning. The bag is sized so the hat isn't compressed, and the seller applies an FNSKU label to the outside. When a pallet of these hats arrives at Amazon, receiving teams scan the visible FNSKU and move items into inventory without additional prep, reducing delays and non-compliance fees.
- Benefit: Reduced returns and customer complaints from damaged or soiled apparel.
- Risk: Incorrect bag thickness or missing suffocation warning can result in receiving rejections or prep fees.
Tips For Compliance
- Follow Amazon Guidance: Use Amazon's most recent packaging and prep documentation for polybag requirements by ASIN and category.
- Standardize Materials: Keep a stock of compliant bag sizes and thicknesses in your warehouse to prevent ad hoc substitutions.
- Labeling Checks: Verify FNSKU barcode readability through the bag during QA before shipment.
- Document Processes: Maintain a written SOP for polybagging to train seasonal staff or 3PL partners.
In short, the FBA Polybagging requirement exists to protect items that are loose, textile, liquid, or exposed during Amazon fulfillment. Proper bag selection, labeling, and process control keep inventory moving into available stock, avoid delays, and lower damage and return rates.
