FNSKU labels are Amazon-specific identification barcodes that tie a physical unit to a seller's listing inside Amazon's fulfillment network. Each FNSKU encodes a unique identifier that tells Amazon's warehouse systems which merchant owns the inventory and which product listing the unit belongs to. For any merchant sending goods to Amazon FBA in the United States, correct FNSKU application is mandatory when Amazon requires seller-applied labeling or when units are commingled without manufacturer barcodes.
Why FNSKU Labels Exist
Amazon uses FNSKUs to prevent misattribution of sales and to preserve seller-level inventory control. When a barcode scan resolves to an FNSKU, Amazon’s WMS updates the inventory count for the merchant associated with that code. This prevents one seller’s units from being sold under another seller’s listing, which could otherwise happen with shared product identifiers like manufacturer UPCs. FNSKUs also speed receiving and picking workflows by giving a single, scannable reference that links to the exact listing and handling requirements.
How FNSKU Labeling Works In Practice
When a merchant creates a shipment in Seller Central and elects to have Amazon provide an FNSKU, the system assigns an FNSKU to the specific Seller SKU. Amazon includes the FNSKU on inbound shipping labels or provides a printable FNSKU label file for seller application. The seller prints the label (often on 2" x 1" or 1.5" x 1" thermal labels) and applies it to the unit so it covers any other scannable identifiers where required. During intake, Amazon scans the FNSKU and links the received units to the merchant’s inventory.
When FNSKU Labeling Is Required
Amazon will require FNSKU labels in several scenarios: when a product is unique to a seller, when an item lacks an acceptable manufacturer barcode, or when the seller opts out of commingling. Additionally, certain product categories (e.g., inbound food, personal care, or items requiring condition inspection) often require seller-applied labeling. Failure to follow the labeling requirements can trigger receiving delays, labeling fees, or units being refused at the fulfillment center.
Label Placement And Quality Standards
Proper placement and print quality are critical. Labels must be scannable on a single exposure, unobstructed by seams, folds, or reflective packaging. Recommended practices include placing the label on a flat surface of the product (not the bottom), avoiding curved or textured areas, and ensuring contrast between barcode and background. Print resolution should be high enough that barcode scanners read consistently—thermal transfers or direct thermal printers at 203–300 dpi are common choices.

Fix by calibrating printers, switching to higher-quality thermal labels, and performing scan tests. Misapplied labels—on seams, over edges, or on inner packaging—are solved with clear SOPs, training, and QC checks at packing stations. Consider a final scan check before sealed cartons leave the packing line.
Using Third-Party Labeling Services
Many merchants outsource FNSKU labeling to 3PLs or prep centers that specialize in Amazon FBA requirements. Outsourcing reduces labor overhead and error rates, especially for large or geographically distributed inventories. When using a service, provide clear instructions, scan verification requirements, and sample-labeled units. Confirm the provider follows Amazon’s current label specs and retains image or scan logs for dispute resolution.
Practical Example
A mid-sized apparel merchant ships 5,000 units to Amazon over several pallets. Their WMS prints FNSKU labels on 2" x 1" thermal labels at packing stations. Operators apply labels to the front panel of polybagged shirts, avoiding the manufacturer UPC. A lead operator performs a 1% scan audit each day; failed scans trigger immediate re-labeling. When Amazon receives the pallets, the FNSKUs scan cleanly and inventory is allocated to the correct Seller SKU without manual adjustments.
