- Ocean: Best for high-volume, low-cost international moves; containers are standard for intermodal handoffs.
- Air: Fastest and most expensive; used for time-sensitive or high-value items where inventory carrying cost outweighs transport cost.
- Intermodal: Combines modes (e.g., ocean + rail + truck) to balance cost and transit time.
How Freight Pricing Is Calculated
Freight pricing is multi-component and varies by mode and service level. Key components include base linehaul, fuel surcharge, accessorials, and any special handling fees. For LTL, pricing also depends on freight class; for FTL pricing is often a per-mile or flat-route rate.
- Base Rate: A linehaul charge set by the carrier or contracted rate between shipper and carrier.
- Dimensional Weight Or Cubic Pricing: Applies when cargo volume is large relative to weight; carriers charge by greater of actual weight or dimensional weight.
- Freight Class (LTL): A standardized classification (NMFC) that groups products by density, stowability, handling, and liability to determine LTL rates.

For merchants and 3PLs, negotiating the right mix of contracted rates, minimum volumes, and service guarantees directly affects profitability and customer service metrics such as on-time delivery and order cycle time.
Who Pays And How Responsibility Is Assigned
Payment responsibility for freight depends on commercial terms and contracts. In domestic moves, the shipper typically pays freight unless otherwise agreed. For cross-border moves Incoterms determine whether the buyer or seller pays and who handles customs. Third-party billing, collect shipments, and third-party logistics partners complicate responsibility — always confirm billing terms on the bill of lading and contract.

A mid-sized e‑commerce merchant in Chicago ships a 12-pallet order to a retailer in Atlanta. The pallets total 3,600 lbs and occupy 800 cubic feet. The shipper compares FTL (dedicated truck) vs LTL consolidation. FTL is preferred if tight delivery windows exist or freight is time sensitive; LTL may be cheaper if the carrier consolidates across multiple shippers, but the shipper will pay accessorials for liftgate at the retailer's dock. The shipper measures density to assign an accurate NMFC class, verifies pallet quality for safe loading, and confirms pickup appointments to avoid detention charges.

- Audit Freight Bills: Regularly compare carrier invoices to agreed rates and shipment documents to catch incorrect accessorials, duplicate charges, or misclassification.
- Optimize Palletization: Maximize cube and prevent damage using standard pallet sizes and proper stretch-wrap to reduce dimensional weight penalties and claims.
- Negotiate Accessorial Terms: Secure caps on common accessorials or include them in negotiated rate tables when possible.
- Use A TMS: Route optimization, carrier selection, and rate-shopping tools reduce cost and improve visibility.
- Classify Accurately: Misclassifying LTL freight is a leading cause of disputes; document density and packaging in the BOL.
