Definition

GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) is a standardized numeric identifier assigned to products and trade items for use in barcodes and electronic commerce. Managed by GS1, GTINs uniquely identify items across the supply chain and enable consistent tracking, inventory management, and point-of-sale operations.

Overview

GTIN A global trade item number used to uniquely identify trade items across retail and ecommerce systems. The GTIN is the numeric identifier printed as a barcode on packaging, embedded in product feeds, and used by retailers, marketplaces, and supply-chain partners to match products accurately across systems.


The GTIN system is administered by GS1 and supports multiple digit lengths (8, 12, 13, 14) to accommodate different packaging levels and regional legacy codes. Retail buyers, point-of-sale systems, and online marketplaces rely on GTINs to de-duplicate catalog entries, trigger inventory searches, and apply correct pricing and promotions.


How The GTIN Is Structured


The GTIN encodes a company prefix, an item reference, and a check digit. The company prefix identifies the brand owner or manufacturer; the item reference identifies the specific trade item; and the check digit validates the number when scanned or entered.


  • Company Prefix: Assigned by GS1 to a brand owner; determines the range of item references available to that company.
  • Item Reference: The number the brand assigns to a specific trade item or SKU.
  • Check Digit: A single digit calculated from the preceding numbers that helps detect data entry or scanning errors.


Why GTINs Matter For Retailers


Accurate GTIN use reduces mismatches between supplier catalogs and retailer systems, which decreases returns, mispriced items, and listing errors. Barcode scanning at the point of sale depends on GTINs to capture the right product and price. For omnichannel retailers, a consistent GTIN across online and offline channels streamlines inventory visibility and replenishment.


How GTINs Vary By Region And Format


GTIN-12 (commonly called UPC) predominates in North America, GTIN-13 (often referred to as EAN) is common in Europe and other regions, while GTIN-14 is used for logistic units and multipacks. The numeric value encodes the same concepts but varies in length to meet historical and logistical needs.


Who Issues GTINs And Who Should Buy Them


GS1 issues company prefixes and governs GTIN allocation rules. Brand owners and manufacturers who place products into retail channels should register with GS1 and purchase prefixes appropriate to their product range. Merchants reselling bundled or private-label items may also need to license GTINs to avoid catalog conflicts.


Practical Example: From Manufacturer To Shelf


A manufacturer registers with GS1 and receives a company prefix. They assign an item reference and create a GTIN for each SKU, print a barcode on each package, and supply the GTIN in product data sent to retailers. A retailer scans the barcode at receiving to match the GTIN against the purchase order; the same GTIN appears online, ensuring the product page and in-store shelf are consistent.


Common Implementation Pitfalls


  • Reusing Codes: Reassigning a GTIN to a different product creates catalog confusion and violates GS1 rules.
  • Incorrect Barcode Type: Using the wrong barcode symbology or size can cause scanning failures at checkout.
  • Missing GTINs In Feeds: Omitting GTINs from ecommerce feeds causes listing rejections or poor search performance on marketplaces.


Best Practices For Warehouse And Catalog Teams


  • Centralize GTIN Management: Keep a single master record per SKU that records GTIN, packaging level, and associated barcodes.
  • Validate Check Digits: Use automated checks in WMS and PIM systems to catch transposition or data-entry errors.
  • Align Packaging Levels: Assign distinct GTINs to single units, multipacks, and cartons to avoid scanning ambiguity in distribution and retail environments.


In short, the GTIN provides the universal numeric key that ties physical barcodes, product feeds, and retail systems together so inventory, pricing, and product records remain consistent across the supply chain.
