What Is Hook Rate? Measuring Early Viewer Retention
Hook Rate
Definition
The percentage of viewers who continue watching after the opening seconds of a video ad or social post.
Overview
Hook Rate The percentage of viewers who continue watching after the opening seconds of a video ad or social post. This metric isolates the earliest stage of audience engagement — the moment a viewer decides to keep watching past an account's opening seconds, autoplay preview, or the first frame of a story or short-form clip.
Marketers use Hook Rate to judge whether a creative's start is strong enough to earn attention on platforms where users scroll rapidly. Because many platforms report views differently, the hook is a behavioral snapshot: did the viewer scroll past, or did they commit to the next segment of content?
What The Metric Actually Measures
At its core, Hook Rate measures the percentage of people who remain watching after a defined “opening” window — commonly the first 2–10 seconds depending on format and platform. It differs from longer-term metrics like completion rate or view-through rate because it focuses exclusively on that early decision point.
Why Hook Rate Matters
Hook Rate is a high-signal indicator for content that needs to interrupt scrolling behavior. When your creative must win attention within seconds, the hook predicts downstream performance (clicks, conversions, watch time). Higher hook rates reduce wasted impressions and improve the efficiency of CPM-driven buys because a larger share of impressions generate meaningful engagement.
How Hook Rate Is Calculated
There are two steps to calculate Hook Rate:
- Define: Choose the opening window (for example, the first 3 seconds for a 6-second bumper, or the first 5 seconds for a 15-second social clip).
- Measure: Count viewers who continue past that window and divide by total viewers who saw the opening. Hook Rate = (Viewers After Opening / Viewers At Opening) × 100.
How It Differs From Similar Metrics
Hook Rate vs. View-Through Rate: view-through typically measures completion or a fixed longer duration (10–30 seconds or full ad). Hook Rate isolates only the opening decision.
Typical Benchmarks And Variability
Benchmarks vary by platform, format, and audience. Short-form social tends to demand stronger hooks because users scroll quickly; in-stream pre-roll on video platforms can tolerate slightly slower builds. Expect higher hook rates for audience segments with prior brand familiarity and for creatives that open with a clear visual or narrative promise.
Who Uses Hook Rate And When
Performance marketers, creative directors, and media buyers use Hook Rate most often when optimizing social and programmatic video buys. It’s especially useful in early creative testing, where quick pass/fail decisions on cuts or openers help prioritize which versions go to scale.
Practical Example
Imagine a 15-second Instagram ad where 1,000 users load the ad and 620 continue watching after the first 3 seconds. Hook Rate = (620 / 1000) × 100 = 62%. If a variant with a stronger visual opener lifts the hook to 78%, that variant should be prioritized for larger media spends because it captures attention more effectively.
Tips For Interpreting Hook Rate
- Context: Always pair hook data with downstream KPIs (CTR, conversions, watch time) to understand whether the hook leads to meaningful action.
- Platform Definitions: Confirm how your analytics provider counts “viewers at opening” — some platforms count autoplay impressions differently.
- Segmentation: Break hook rate by creative variant, audience, placement, and device; hooks can perform very differently on mobile feeds versus connected-TV.
In short, the Hook Rate is a focused early-warning indicator that tells whether a video’s opening convinces viewers to keep watching — a practical metric for creative testing and efficient media allocation.
