Overview
Inbound Freight refers to freight moving from a supplier, manufacturer, port, vendor, or origin facility into a warehouse or distribution center. This includes full-load shipments from contract carriers, palletized LTL deliveries, import containers off a port, and vendor packs arriving at a retail distribution center. Inbound freight is the flow that feeds inventory positions and triggers receiving processes inside a facility.
Understanding inbound freight means tracking three linked activities: transportation from origin to the receiving dock, documentation and compliance at the point of entry, and the warehouse tasks that convert a delivered shipment into usable inventory — such as unloading, inspection, and putaway. For many warehouses the inbound function sets the tempo for labor, dock schedules, and replenishment planning.
What The Term Typically Covers
Inbound freight is broader than a single truck arriving. It typically covers the physical movement, the paperwork that accompanies it, and the upstream processes that prepare a shipment for receipt. Common elements include:

Inbound freight characteristics change depending on whether goods come from a domestic supplier, an overseas port, or an LTL carrier. Ocean imports usually move in containers requiring customs clearance and appointment windows for drayage; domestic FTL might require minimal paperwork but exact dock times; LTL means multiple stops and mixed pallets requiring additional sorting on receipt.

Costs and risks on inbound freight arise from mode choice, detention and demurrage exposure, incorrect documentation, and excessive touches during receiving. Key cost drivers include expedited transport, inside delivery or liftgate requests, detention at the dock, and manual reconciliation for mismatched paperwork. Risks include damaged goods from improper packaging, customs holds for missing documentation, and inaccurate counts leading to stockouts or overstocks.

- Standardize Packaging And Labels: Use GS1 barcodes, consistent pallet patterns, and clear packing lists to speed scanning and putaway.
- Require ASNs: Enforce electronic advance notices with SKU-level detail so receiving can plan labor and staging.
- Schedule Appointments: Use dock appointment systems to level load, reduce wait time, and prevent congestion.
- Align KPIs: Track on-time arrivals, receiving cycle time, discrepancy rate, and cost per received unit.
Practical Example
A consumer goods retailer receives weekly inbound freight from multiple vendors. Vendors submit ASNs 48 hours in advance with pallet counts and UPC-level details. The retailer books dock appointments, sequences arrivals to balance labor across shifts, and reserves staging space for cross-dock flows. When a container arrives from overseas, the forwarder electronically clears customs and releases the container; the warehouse receives an updated ETA, schedules drayage, and credits received inventory into the WMS after inspection.
