Last-Mile Delivery is the final transportation stage from a local facility to the customer. It describes the movement of a parcel, pallet, or shipment from a distribution center, micro-fulfillment site, or carrier hub directly to the end recipient — a residence, retail location, or pickup point.
Last-mile delivery is the most visible leg of the supply chain: customers notice it directly when packages arrive late, damaged, or on time. Because it happens in dense urban areas and dispersed rural routes, last-mile operations combine logistical complexity with customer-facing performance metrics such as on-time delivery, delivery window adherence, and condition on arrival.
What The Stage Typically Covers
Last-mile activities vary by service level and industry but commonly include:
- Pickup From Local Facility: Sorting at a regional distribution center, local hub, or micro-fulfillment center before assignment to a route.
- Routing And Dispatch: Route planning for drivers, dynamic rerouting for traffic or failed attempts, and assignment of delivery windows.

Carriers and 3PLs manage execution and may charge surcharges for residential delivery, delivery area surcharges, or oversized-item handling.

The carrier sorts packages at the hub, assigns them to route vans, and dispatches drivers. Drivers use a carrier app for turn-by-turn navigation and capture POD via a photo or signature. If the customer isn’t home and no safe-drop instructions exist, the carrier attempts re-delivery or returns the parcel to a network facility — adding cost and delay.
