The process spans selection of label type, placement on SKU formats (folded, on hanger, in polybag), the equipment used for application, and the verification workflows that catch mistakes before shipment.


Common Label Types And Materials


Labels must survive handling, transportation, and the retail lifecycle; material choice matters.

  • Hang Tags: Paper or coated cardstock with string or plastic fastener, used for premium garments and store presentation.
  • Adhesive Stickers: Pressure-sensitive labels for polybags or folded garments; available in permanent and removable adhesives.
  • Size Strips/Plackets: Small sewn-in or attached fabric strips (often at the collar or waist) used for durability and high-volume retail scanning.
  • Printed Inserts: Card or strip inserted into packaging; common in bundle or pre-pack operations.


Why Placement And Readability Matter


Label placement affects pick accuracy, cashier speed, and online photos. For hanging garments, the collar or neck area is typical; for folded items the size sticker on the front-facing fold is standard; for polybagged items the sticker must be visible through the bag. Readability covers font size, contrast, and barcode quality; poor contrast or misaligned barcodes lead to scanning failures at POS or in warehouse scanning and create chargebacks from retailers.


How Size Labeling Fits Into Fulfillment Workflows


In a warehouse, size labeling can occur at several points depending on the operation’s model and the contract with the merchant.

  • Inbound Labeling: Labels applied as goods are received and sorted—useful when products arrive without standardized size marks.
  • Pick/Pack Labeling: Applied at pack station when items are prepared for an order; reduces rework for returns.
  • Pre-Pack/Ready-to-Ship: Labels applied in batch before orders are created—common for retail replenishment and EDI shipments.


Verification And Quality Control


Verification prevents mis-shipments and retailer fines. Typical controls include sampling audits, barcode scan checks, and automated weighing cross-checks.

  • Sample Audits: Periodic manual checks of labeled items against the SKU/size on the pick ticket.
  • Scan Verification: Scanning the barcode on the size label at pack to confirm SKU and size match the order.
  • Reject Criteria: Defined tolerances for label damage, misplacement, or print defects along with rework procedures.


Equipment And Software Considerations


Choosing the right printers, applicators, and WMS settings reduces labor and errors.

  • Thermal Printers: Common for adhesive stickers and hang tags; choose durable ribbon types for long-lasting prints.
  • Label Applicators: Semi- or fully-automated applicators reduce repetitive strain and speed throughput for high-volume SKUs.
  • WMS Integration: WMS or WCS should store label templates, placement rules, and verification prompts to guide packers and trigger QC steps.


Who Typically Owns The Responsibility


Responsibility is defined by contract and channel. Merchants usually specify label format for brand consistency; 3PLs and warehouses execute the work under SLAs; retailers mandate location and barcode standards for replenishment and returns.

  • Merchant: Provides size conventions, templates, and often materials for branded presentation.
  • Warehouse/3PL: Executes labeling and verification, manages equipment and labor.
  • Retailer: Defines acceptance standards and can issue chargebacks for non-compliant labeling.


Common Problems And Quick Fixes


Labeling issues are common but manageable with standard troubleshooting.

  • Smudged Prints: Use higher-quality ribbons or adjust print head temperature; enforce sample checks.
  • Wrong Size Applied: Implement mandatory scan verification at pack and increase sampling frequency for error-prone SKUs.
  • Label Falls Off: Switch to stronger adhesive or change placement to a protected area (inside polybag).
