Labels can be simple printed alphanumeric codes, human-readable descriptions, barcodes, QR codes, or RFID tags. The label links a physical unit to inventory records in a warehouse management system (WMS), enterprise resource planning software (ERP), or simple inventory spreadsheet.

Consistent SKU labeling reduces picking errors, speeds putaway and replenishment, and enables accurate cycle counts. When labels are tied to a WMS, scanning a SKU provides instant visibility into on-hand quantity, lot, serial number, and location history. How Labels Are Applied


Label application varies by operation size and product type. Small operations may print and affix labels manually at receiving or during unitization. Common elements include a SKU code, product description, pack quantity, unit of measure, lot/batch number, and expiration date where applicable. Use fixed formats (e.g., SKU-0001234) and avoid embedding volatile data in the SKU itself—reserve lot and date for separate barcode fields or label elements.


How It Integrates With Systems


SKU labels become most powerful when integrated into a WMS or TMS. Scanners update inventory levels in real time during receiving, picking, and shipping. Integration reduces manual data entry and provides audit trails for traceability. For smaller merchants, direct integration between label printing software and an inventory management app or ERP achieves the same basic result.


Practical Example


A clothing fulfillment center receives a pallet of shirts. Each SKU is labeled at the carton level with a Code 128 barcode containing the SKU and carton quantity. The WMS records the receipt when a worker scans the pallet barcode, then prints bin labels and directs putaway to a location with matching bin label QR codes. During picking, associates scan the bin and the SKU label; the WMS decrements inventory and routes the picked carton to packing.


How It Varies By Industry


Regulated industries like pharmaceuticals require lot and expiry data on labels and strict chain-of-custody tracking. Perishables often need temperature-stable labels and barcode symbologies that survive moisture and freezing. High-value electronics benefit from serialized SKUs and tamper-evident labels to prevent fraud and simplify returns.


Common Pitfalls And How To Avoid Them


  • Poor Label Placement: If labels sit on package seams or corners they wrinkle or fall off—position labels on flat, clean surfaces.
  • Inconsistent Formats: Multiple SKU formats confuse staff and systems—standardize SKU structure and label templates.
  • Low-Quality Materials: Cheap label stock can fade or fail—match material and adhesive to storage and shipping conditions.

  • Start Simple: Begin with carton-level labeling before adding product-level or serialized labels.
