Overview
Stretch Wrap Plastic film wrapped around a palletized load to secure products during handling and transportation. Stretch film is the primary mechanical device warehouses and carriers use to contain, stabilize, and protect pallet loads without adding rigid packaging.
Stretch film is a thin, highly elastic plastic film supplied in rolls for hand or machine application. It stretches and shrinks back against the load, creating tension that holds boxes, bags, and mixed SKU pallets together. Modern formulations include cast and blown film, variable gauges, pre-stretch capability, anti-static and UV-stabilized options, and films with recycled content. Selection depends on load characteristics, application method, and performance goals such as containment strength, load protection, and cost per pallet.
Common Film Types
Stretch film is commonly categorized by the extrusion method, width, thickness, and whether it’s designed for hand or machine use:
- Cast Film: Produced on large chilled rollers; offers quiet unwind, clarity, and consistent stretch — preferred for high-clarity packaging and automatic dispensers.
- Blown Film: Made by inflating a molten tube; tougher and more puncture-resistant but has a noisier unwind and slightly higher cost per foot.
- Hand Stretch Film: Narrower rolls and lower pre-stretch for manual application; lower output but good for irregular or low-volume loads.
- Machine Stretch Film: Wider rolls with high pre-stretch capability for pallet wrapping machines; reduces film usage per pallet and improves containment consistency.
- Specialty Films: Colored, perforated, anti-slip, VCI (corrosion inhibiting), UV-resistant, or films with high recycled-content for sustainability programs.
Why It Matters
Stretch film is inexpensive compared with crates, banding, or corrugated boxing but delivers major operational value. It minimizes load damage by preventing shift during lift, transport, and cross-docking. It speeds packing at the dock, reduces pallet footprint issues caused by loose product, and can add tamper-evidence and weather protection. For 3PLs and carriers, consistent film choice improves throughput and reduces on-road damage claims.
How Performance Varies
Performance is driven by three interdependent variables: film formulation, gauge (thickness), and application method. Thicker film increases tear and puncture resistance; higher pre-stretch reduces consumption per pallet but requires a compatible dispenser or machine; blown film resists puncture better than cast film but costs more. Application technique — how many wraps, overlap percentage, top-edge and bottom-edge securing — often has more impact on containment than small changes in film gauge.
Practical Application Considerations
- Containment Strategy: Use more wraps at the base and mid-height for tall, heavy loads; apply top wraps for light or shift-prone items.
- Pre-Stretch Use: Use machine pre-stretch when possible to lower film use per pallet and improve load-holding force.
- Film Width: Select wider film (20"–30") for faster machine cycles and better coverage on tall pallets; narrower film (8"–15") is common for manual wraps and irregular loads.
- Temperature & Storage: Keep film rolls at moderate temperature and humidity; cold warehouses can make film brittle and harder to stretch.
Tips For Warehouse Managers
Implement short trials whenever you change film types. Measure film usage per pallet, wrap time, and damage claims for several weeks before rolling changes into standard operating procedures. Train staff on consistent overlap and wrap patterns — small changes in wrapping technique often save more film and reduce damage than switching formulations. Consider pilot testing pre-stretch machines to reduce visible film waste and lower cost per pallet.
