Structured Data Machine-readable product information that helps search engines understand price, availability, reviews, images, and product details. For merchants and warehouses selling online, structured data is the markup added to product pages or data feeds so search engines and shopping platforms can display rich results, price snippets, availability flags, review stars, and other enhanced listings.


Structured data is not a replacement for human-facing content; it is a parallel layer of information encoded in formats like JSON-LD, Microdata, or RDFa. Search engines read that layer to extract canonical product attributes (SKU, brand, price, currency, stock status, GTIN, and aggregateRating) and to create features such as knowledge panels, rich snippets, and product carousels.


What The Markup Typically Includes


Product structured data focuses on attributes that directly affect purchase decisions and indexing. Typical fields supplied in product markup include product identifiers, pricing, availability, images, descriptions, review data, and merchant-specific data like condition and shipping details.


  • Identifier: GTIN, UPC, MPN, or SKU to uniquely identify the product.
  • Price: Price value and currency using standardized formats.
  • Availability: Stock status such as InStock, OutOfStock, or PreOrder.
  • Rating: Aggregate review score and count for star displays.
  • Images: URL(s) to product images sized per platform requirements.


Why Structured Data Matters For E‑commerce


Structured data increases the chances that a product will appear with rich results in search and shopping experiences. Those enhanced listings improve click-through rates, convey trust signals (ratings, price), and reduce friction between discovery and conversion. For marketplaces and 3PLs managing product information for multiple merchants, consistent structured data reduces mismatches and rescues listings that would otherwise be rejected by platforms that rely on machine-readable attributes.


How It Varies By Platform And Use Case


Different search engines and commerce platforms accept different fields and formats. Google prioritizes JSON-LD for web pages and has specific required and recommended properties for product structured data. Marketplaces or ad platforms may require additional feed fields (shipping, taxCategory) or enforce strict identifier rules. Organizations that sell worldwide must also adapt currency, availability terminology, and regulatory labeling per region.


  • Format Differences: JSON-LD is preferred for web pages; data feeds may use CSV/XML with schema.org mappings.
  • Required Fields: Some platforms require GTINs or brand names for listings; missing identifiers can suppress rich features.
  • Internationalization: Currency, language, and localized availability need correct encoding.


Who Should Manage Structured Data


Responsibility often sits at the intersection of web development, merchandising, and catalog management. Small merchants typically handle markup through e‑commerce platform plugins. Larger retailers, brands, and 3PLs integrate structured data into product information management (PIM) systems or export normalized feeds from a WMS/WCS to CMS and ad channels.


  • Merchants: Ensure product pages include accurate markup for pricing, availability, and GTINs.
  • Warehouse/3PL operators: Provide up-to-date inventory status and condition flags to the commerce stack.
  • Developers/Integrators: Implement JSON-LD snippets or feed exports and validate markup with testing tools.


Practical Example


A merchant sells a jacket. The product page includes a JSON-LD block with the product name, SKU, brand, GTIN, price in USD, availability status tied to the WMS SKU level, an array of image URLs hosted on the CDN, and an aggregateRating field fed by the reviews service. When stock for a particular size falls to zero, the WMS updates the inventory feed; the merchant’s site regenerates the JSON-LD so search engines see "OutOfStock" and stop showing that variant as purchasable.


Implementation Tips For Reliable Results


Implement structured data in a way that keeps the machine-readable layer synchronized with visible content. Inconsistencies between on-page price and markup, or stale availability, can lead to manual actions or rich result suppression.


  • Keep It Synchronized: Tie markup generation to the same data source used on the page (PIM or CMS) rather than hard-coding values.
  • Use Preferred Formats: Deploy JSON-LD for web pages and validate with Google’s Rich Results Test.
  • Validate Regularly: Use search console and feed diagnostics to catch missing required properties.
  • Prioritize Unique Identifiers: Supply GTINs and brand names where available to reduce suppression risk.


In short, the Structured Data layer is a small but critical piece of product discovery. When implemented correctly and kept current with inventory and pricing sources, it drives richer search appearances and reduces listing friction across shopping platforms.
