How The Process Works


Tray shrink wrapping has three main stages: tray loading, film application and sealing, followed by heat shrinking. Workers or automation load product onto the tray (cardboard, plastic, or corrugated). A roll of shrink film—usually polyolefin, PVC, or polyethylene—is drawn over the top of the tray and sealed along an overlap or through a heat-seal bar. The wrapped tray passes through a shrink tunnel (or receives concentrated hot-air, infrared, or gas-heated shrink) which causes the film to conform tightly to the product and tray, removing slack and creating a tamper-evident, neat appearance.


Common Tray And Film Materials


  • Tray Material: Cardboard trays are low-cost and recyclable; plastic trays (APET, PET, or recycled plastics) offer stiffness and moisture resistance for heavier loads.
  • Shrink Film Type: Polyolefin is the most common for food and mixed retail because it balances clarity, puncture resistance, and seal strength. PVC is lower-cost but less commonly used due to environmental and heat-sensitivity issues. PE shrink film is used when stretch resistance and heavy-duty protection are required.
  • Additives and Printing: Films can include anti-fog coatings for chilled products or be printed for branding and UPC placement for retail readiness.

Tray shrink wrapping is a practical answer where presentation, product protection and compactness matter. How It Varies By Application


Parameters change depending on whether packs are for ambient retail shelves, refrigerated cases, or non-food merchandise. For chilled foods, choose anti-fog polyolefin and low-temperature shrink settings to avoid damaging products. Light, fragile items benefit from trays with internal dividers or die-cut inserts; heavy or irregular items may require thicker film gauge or reinforced tray bases. High-volume grocery lines typically use semi-automatic or fully automatic tray packers with in-line seal and shrink tunnel; smaller promotional runs can be hand-packed and run through a benchtop tunnel.

Tray shrink wrapping often costs less than designing and printing bespoke retail cartons and can be faster to change over for different SKUs. Capital costs include a sealer, shrink tunnel and possibly a conveyor; labor varies with automation level. Film is the recurring cost—thicker gauges and specialty coatings raise price. Throughput ranges from a few dozen packs per hour on manual lines to several hundred per minute on fully automated systems; choose equipment to match order volume and labor economics.

The result is a stable, display-ready multipack with printed film for pricing and a UPC on the tray that the retailer can receive and shelve without rework.

  • Start With Film Trials: Test film types and gauges with real SKU geometry to check wrap conformity and puncture resistance.
  • Control Heat Profiles: Adjust tunnel temperature and dwell time to avoid product damage—chilled or plastic-packaged goods need lower temps.
