Keep Away From Magnets

Definition

An environmental handling instruction requiring the package to be managed according to 'Keep Away From Magnets'.

Overview

Keep Away From Magnets is an environmental handling instruction requiring the package to be managed according to 'Keep Away From Magnets'. In fulfillment this label tells every touchpoint — pick, pack, staging, storage, and shipment — to prevent exposure of the item to sources of magnetic fields that could damage the product, nearby packages, or sensitive equipment and people (for example, medical devices).

Fulfillment staff encounter this instruction when items contain permanent magnets, magnetized components, magnetic closures, or are sensitive to magnetic fields (magnetic media, some sensors, and medical devices). The instruction is operational: it changes how the unit moves through the warehouse, where it is stored, how it is packed, and whether carriers require special declaration.

Why The Instruction Matters

Magnetic fields can do damage that is invisible at pick time: they can erase magnetic stripes, corrupt magnetic media, change the calibration of some sensors, attract ferrous objects during transit, and interfere with implanted medical devices. For warehouses handling mixed SKUs, a single magnetized carton placed near magnetic-sensitive inventory or workplace equipment can cause loss or safety incidents and trigger costly claims or regulatory reporting.

How It Changes Fulfillment Workflows

When an order or SKU carries this instruction, typical workflow changes include separate storage locations, pick-and-pack special handling, and explicit carrier notification. The item should be flagged in the WMS so pickers see a visual cue and packing staff apply approved packaging and labeling. If the fulfillment center cross-docks or consolidates shipments, teams must ensure magnetized packages never travel adjacent to sensitive items.

Operational Controls And Checks

  • WMS Flagging: Create a mandatory attribute or handling code so the pick ticket and packing station display the instruction prominently.
  • Dedicated Storage: Use a separate bay or pallet area away from electronics, magnetic media, and medical devices.
  • Packing Checklist: Require packers to follow a checklist — confirm shielding or barrier materials, place warning labels, and add a handling note on the packing slip.

Carrier And Regulatory Considerations

Most carriers and modal regulations do not classify common magnets as hazardous, but air transport has specific rules about magnetized materials because strong magnetic fields can affect aircraft instruments. Fulfillers using air freight should consult carrier rules and IATA guidance before booking. Ground carriers and postal services may have policies that affect labeling, segregation, or liability for magnet-related damage.

Practical Example

A fulfillment center receives a bulk shipment of loudspeakers that include substantial magnets. The receiving team logs each SKU with a "Keep Away From Magnets" attribute. Receivers place those pallets in a designated area away from back-up tapes and medical-supply SKUs. Pickers assigned those orders use a separate tote color and the WMS blocks mixed-carton consolidation with sensitive items. Packers wrap the magnetized component in a mu-metal-approved shielding layer supplied by the product manufacturer, add the handling label, and note the special handling on the bill of lading for the carrier.

Who Is Responsible

  • Merchant/Shipper: Declares the handling instruction on the order, provides product-specific guidance, and supplies any required shielding materials.
  • Warehouse/Fulfillment Provider: Implements WMS flags, training, storage segregation, and packing procedures.
  • Carrier: Follows any transport limits, accepts declared shipments under carrier rules, and may request additional documentation for air transport.

In short, the Keep Away From Magnets instruction forces specific operational controls across receiving, storage, picking, packing, and shipping to protect products, equipment, and people from magnetic-field effects. Implement it as a WMS attribute, dedicated storage rule, packing checklist item, and carrier declaration whenever a product or its surroundings risk magnetic interference.
