What 'Roll This Way' Means for Warehouse Handling
Roll This Way
Definition
A directional marking indicating the permitted direction in which a cylindrical or rollable package should be rolled.
Overview
Roll This Way A directional marking indicating the permitted direction in which a cylindrical or rollable package should be rolled.
The Roll This Way marking tells handlers the intended rolling direction for drums, rolls of material, reels, coils, and other cylindrical or round-packaged goods. It reduces damage, prevents package deformation, and protects contents and equipment by guiding the roll path; the arrow or wording is placed so that the package follows its designed rolling axis rather than being dragged, slid, or rolled the wrong way across a dock or through a conveyor line.
Why The Marking Matters
Rollable loads behave differently than box-shaped cartons. A drum or core will track, pivot, and store differently depending on orientation and the rolling direction. Incorrect rolling can cause ruptures, edge damage to wound goods (film, paper, textiles), axle or core failure with reels, and safety hazards when loads pick up speed on inclined surfaces. The marking reduces handling uncertainty for temporary staff, third-party carriers, and cross-dock operators.
What The Marking Typically Covers
- Direction Guidance: A single arrow or paired arrows indicating permitted rolling direction (forward, backward, or clockwise/counterclockwise).
- Placement Guidance: Recommended locations for the marking (near the cylinder's circumference at one or more visible points).
- Complementary Instructions: Notes such as "Do Not Slide" or maximum incline warnings may appear with the marking.
Where To Apply The Mark
Apply the marking where handlers can see it from typical approach angles: on the side of drums facing the dock, on the flange of reels, or on the outer wrap of rolls. For large reels, place multiple markings around the circumference so one is visible regardless of how the roll is set on a skid. Use high-contrast, durable labels resistant to abrasion and moisture.
Handling Procedures For 'Roll This Way'
Handlers should verify the arrow direction before moving the package. When rolling, use dedicated rollers, cradle pallets, or conveyor rollers aligned with the marked direction. For manual rolling, position personnel to control speed, guide the roll, and avoid pushing from the wrong side. On inclines, lock or block the roll before releasing and use chocks as needed.
Safety And Damage Reduction Measures
- Chocking: Use chocks or wedges when releasing rolls on ramps or tilted surfaces.
- Rated Equipment: Choose roller conveyors and cradles rated for the package diameter and weight.
- Team Lift Protocols: For heavy reels, use mechanical rollers, fork-mounted cradles, or a specialist reel-handling trolley.
How It Interacts With Other Package Marks
Orientation marks such as "This Side Up" and fragile indicators serve different purposes. "Roll This Way" is unique because it specifies the permitted rolling axis; it should not be replaced by a generic orientation arrow. If a package shows conflicting marks, stop and seek clarification from the shipper or packaging engineer before moving the item.
Practical Example
A textile manufacturer ships large carpet rolls on skids. Each roll receives three "Roll This Way" labels around its circumference pointing toward the skid's normal wheel path. At the 3PL receiving dock, temporary staff orient the roll so the arrow points toward the conveyor rollers. During cross-dock transfer, a two-person crew guides the roll onto a cradle and secures it with chocks before transport to prevent axial damage to the carpet and core collapse.
Implementation Tips For Warehouses
- Training: Include "Roll This Way" recognition in onboarding and forklift/roller operation training.
- Label Quality: Use weather- and abrasion-resistant labels with a minimum contrast ratio for legibility in low light.
- SOPs: Document rolling procedures in standard operating procedures and make markings part of receiving checklists.
In short, the Roll This Way marking is a small but high-impact instruction that prevents product damage and improves safety when moving cylindrical and rollable packages. Proper placement, durable labels, and trained handlers turn a simple arrow into predictable, low-risk handling across docks, conveyors, and warehouses.
