Operational Triggers For Choosing IC Trucks


  • Heavy Or Bulky Loads: High-capacity lifts, heavier pallets, and dense unit loads requiring sustained torque favor IC engines.
  • Outdoor Or Rough Terrain: Unpaved yards, ramps, and long outdoor travel are better handled by pneumatic-tire IC forklifts.
  • Quick Refuel Needs: Multi-shift sites that cannot afford long battery charging periods benefit from fast diesel/propane refuels.


Dock And Yard Scenarios


At docks where trucks and trailers arrive continuously, the ability to quickly top off fuel or swap propane cylinders keeps turnaround time low. Yard stacking, container handling, and heavy manufacturing docks commonly use IC forklifts for their power and uptime. IC machines also perform well on uneven loading docks and outdoor ramps where electric traction may be less reliable.


Shift Structure And Utilization


Facilities with multiple shifts and limited downtime for charging favor IC trucks because refueling takes minutes compared with hours for battery charging. Where IC is necessary, consider lower-emission fuels (propane, CNG) and maintain emission control devices to meet local regulations.

IC forklifts introduce specific hazards: fuel handling, exhaust exposure, and higher noise. Train operators on safe refueling, CO and NOx exposure recognition, and pre-operation inspections focused on fuel systems. Provide PPE (hearing protection, gloves) and emergency procedures for spills or leaks.

If a warehouse is considering electrification but currently operates heavy outdoor loads, adopt a phased approach: retain IC units for yard/dock tasks while electrifying indoor fleets. Consider leasing IC trucks for temporary seasonal spikes or retrofitting attachments to extend utility without full replacements.

A Midwest distribution center with both indoor picking and an adjacent outdoor trailer marshalling yard assigned electric sit-down trucks to indoor aisles and propane IC forklifts to dock operations. Propane trucks handle quick trailer moves and outdoor stacking; electrics handle extended indoor picking shifts. The site maintains a small fueling pad and schedules engine services based on hours to reduce downtime.


In short, the Internal Combustion Forklift is appropriate when load weight, outdoor surfaces, fast refueling, and continuous utilization make electric alternatives impractical. Use duty-cycle analysis, regulatory checks, and fueling/maintenance planning to decide when an IC truck is the right tool for the job.
