New-to-Brand Audience

Definition

Shoppers who have not purchased the brand within a defined lookback period.

Overview

New-to-Brand Audience Shoppers who have not purchased the brand within a defined lookback period. Choosing when to prioritize that audience is a strategic decision: it affects budget allocation, messaging, channel selection, and the metrics you prioritize.

Some campaigns aim chiefly to increase lifetime value by nurturing existing customers; others are explicitly acquisition-focused and exist to expand the customer base. Targeting a New-to-Brand Audience is appropriate when the objective is customer acquisition, market expansion, or filling the top of a longer-term funnel that will later drive repeat purchases.

Primary Use Cases For Targeting

  • Market Entry: Launching in a new geography or vertical where the brand has low awareness and needs new buyers to validate product-market fit.
  • SKU Introductions: Promoting a new product line to attract a new cohort of buyers not captured by existing SKUs.
  • Seasonal Acquisition: Heavy acquisition windows ahead of peak season (holiday, back-to-school) to build a larger base for repeat sales.
  • Scaling Growth: When growth targets require expanding buyer reach beyond the existing customer pool.

Campaign Triggers And Timing

Decide on NTB targeting based on business signals, not only on routine schedule.

  • Declining Reach Among Current Buyers: If repeat purchases are plateauing, the brand may need to bring in new buyers to sustain overall revenue growth.
  • Excess Inventory Or New Capacity: When inventory or fulfillment capacity grows, acquiring new buyers helps absorb supply.
  • Competitive Openings: Aggressive competitor moves or channel exits present moments to capture competitors’ customers.

Channel Suitability

Select channels that efficiently reach users outside your buyer base and provide reliable identity signals for NTB measurement.

  • Paid Social & Programmatic: Good for prospecting with lookalike audiences and creative variants targeted at non-buyers.
  • Search (Broad and Discovery): Effective when demand signals exist but brand awareness is low; use new-to-brand tracking if possible.
  • Retail Media: Useful for brands selling through marketplaces; many retail media platforms report new-to-brand metrics tied to purchase history.

Budgeting And Measurement Considerations

Acquisition campaigns generally have a higher CPNC than retention spends and must be judged by different standards. Use a multi-metric dashboard to avoid overreacting to short-term headline CPAs:

  • Efficiency: CPNC or media cost per NTB purchase.
  • Quality: First-order value, return rate, and 30–90 day repurchase rate among NTB buyers.
  • Attribution Consistency: Keep lookback and attribution windows aligned across media and order systems to avoid mismatches.

Practical Example

A mid-market apparel brand notices strong wholesale demand but flat DTC growth. The marketing team runs a 60-day prospecting push on paid social and search with an explicit NTB objective and a 12-month lookback. They measure new-buyer share and CPNC, track first-order AOV, and adjust creative toward higher-AOV NTB segments identified in early results.

Decision Checklist Before Launching An NTB Campaign

  • Business Objective: Is the primary aim customer growth, revenue, awareness, or SKU testing?
  • Attribution Setup: Can you reliably link ad events to first-time orders in your order system?
  • Budget Appropriateness: Is acquisition spend separated from retention spend to prevent cannibalization?
  • Creative Fit: Do messages address first-time buyer barriers (trial, guarantees, onboarding)?

In short, the New-to-Brand Audience should be targeted when objectives require net-new buyers — market entry, SKU introductions, growth scaling, or tactical opportunities. Align lookback, channels, and metrics to the business case before committing significant budget.
