Keep Away From Magnets

Definition

An environmental handling instruction requiring the package to be managed according to 'Keep Away From Magnets'.

Overview

Keep Away From Magnets is an environmental handling instruction requiring the package to be managed according to 'Keep Away From Magnets'. Fulfillment teams must decide when to apply this instruction so they allocate handling controls only where needed and avoid unnecessary operational overhead.

Deciding when to use the instruction is a risk management decision. It depends on the product's intrinsic magnetism, the sensitivity of other inventory and the operating environment (warehouse layout, mixed-SKU pick faces, transport modes). Use cases fall into three broad buckets: products that contain magnets, products sensitive to magnets, and shipments that may create a risk to medical devices or critical instrumentation.

Common Use Cases

  • Magnet-Containing Goods: Items with permanent magnets (speakers, motors, magnetic toys, magnetic closures) should carry the instruction unless they are fully shielded and tested for transport.
  • Magnetic Media And Components: Magnetic stripe cards, legacy magnetic tapes, and some sensors are vulnerable to magnetic fields and often require protective handling.
  • Medical And Safety-Critical Equipment: Devices used in clinical environments or surgical settings that include or are sensitive to magnetic fields need segregation to avoid potentially dangerous interference.

When It May Not Be Necessary

If a manufacturer certifies that products are shipped with effective shielding tested for expected transport environments, or if the magnets are too weak to affect nearby items and the shipper has validated that through testing, the instruction may be omitted. Also, products using solid-state storage (e.g., modern SSDs) are not affected by magnetic fields the way magnetic media are; treat them according to manufacturer guidance rather than rule-of-thumb assumptions.

Exceptions And Controlled Elimination

Before removing the instruction from SKU master data, require documented evidence: engineering test reports showing acceptable field strength outside the package, a manufacturer declaration, or an accepted third-party test against relevant standards. Use a change-control process so distribution and carrier partners are notified of the removal.

Integration With Procurement And Product Design

Merchants can reduce long-term fulfillment cost by addressing magnet risks at design or procurement: opt for weaker magnets that still meet function, add integrated shielding at the product level, or redesign packaging at source. Require suppliers to provide handling instructions and shielding materials when the product contains strong magnets.

Decision Checklist For Applying The Instruction

  • Product Contains Magnets: Apply the instruction unless documented shielding/testing exists.
  • Nearby Sensitive Inventory: Apply when the item will be stored or shipped near magnetic media, medical devices, or precision instruments.
  • Transport Mode Concerns: Apply for air shipments unless carrier and product tests permit omission.
  • Manufacturer Guidance: Follow explicit manufacturer handling requirements; do not override them without testing.

In short, the Keep Away From Magnets label should be applied when product composition, nearby inventory sensitivity, or transport modality create a risk of magnetic interference. Use engineering data, supplier declarations, and a clear WMS change-control process to create consistent rules and avoid unnecessary costs from over-applying the instruction.
