This Side Up

Definition

A carton marking identifying which side of the package should remain uppermost during handling and storage.

Overview

This Side Up A carton marking identifying which side of the package should remain uppermost during handling and storage.

Deciding when to enforce orientation procedures depends on product sensitivity, frequency of orientation-related damages, throughput constraints, and carrier contracts. Warehouses earning tighter service-level agreements (SLAs) or handling high-value, orientation-sensitive SKUs should build formal controls into receiving, picking, palletizing, and loading processes.

When Enforcement Is Mandatory

Enforce orientation rules when any of the following apply: the item contains liquid or semi-liquid components, when an assembly depends on gravity to remain sealed, when alignment affects product function, or when previous damage audits show orientation-related failures. High-value or regulated goods (medical devices, certain chemical formats) often require documented orientation handling as part of compliance.

Points In The Workflow To Enforce It

  • Receiving: Inspect incoming cartons for orientation labels and note mismatches in receiving records.
  • Putaway: Use WMS flags to prevent automatic bin placement until orientation is confirmed.
  • Packing & Palletizing: Ensure pallet patterns preserve the correct top side and mark pallet faces if orientation must be preserved during cross-dock moves.
  • Loading: Include orientation checks in load plans and driver sign-off when cargo is orientation-sensitive.

Integrating With WMS And SOPs

Modern WMS platforms can store orientation attributes at the SKU or LPN level and surface handling rules on mobile devices. Define an orientation attribute in the item master, tie it to SOP steps (e.g., mandatory orientation confirmation checkbox), and capture completion in the work task to create an auditable trail.

Training And Operational Controls

Train staff with short, practical modules and visual aids showing correct versus incorrect placement. Use simple KPIs: orientation nonconformance rate, damage ratio for orientation-sensitive SKUs, and time-to-correct when orientation is incorrect. Reinforce with spot audits and corrective coaching for repeat errors.

Cost Versus Benefit

Enforcement adds handling steps and sometimes slower throughput; this cost must be balanced against the value preserved. For low-cost, resilient goods, strict enforcement may be unnecessary. For expensive, mission-critical, or regulatory items, the cost of enforcement is typically justified by reduced returns, fewer claims, and higher customer satisfaction.

Practical Example

A 3PL handling consumer appliances tags orientation-sensitive models in the WMS. When such an order is picked, the pick ticket displays a bright orientation icon; handlers must place cartons on the pallet with the marked face up, and a supervisor signs the pallet build checklist. After implementing the control, the 3PL's returns for the appliances dropped by over 30% in six months.

In short, the This Side Up marking should be enforced whenever product design, audit history, or contractual obligations show that incorrect orientation causes loss. Use WMS flags, clear SOPs, and targeted training to keep these items upright through every touchpoint.
