Practical Example: Carrier Selection


A rules-based approach might route parcels by weight: under 2 lb to Carrier A, over 2 lb to Carrier B. A workflow automation implementation expands this by considering customer priority, delivery SLA, carrier performance, dimensional weight, and real-time rate. If Carrier A is down, the workflow reruns selection logic, reprints labels, and notifies customer service — all without human intervention.


Choosing Between Them


  • Assess Complexity: If your decisions involve single-step outcomes, start with rules; if they require sequencing or external events, choose workflow automation.
  • Map Exceptions: The higher the frequency and variety of exceptions, the more value you’ll get from workflows that can escalate and remediate automatically.
