Introduction
Grupo Servicio Móvil, a leading logistics provider based in northwestern Spain, has partnered with Dematic to install an advanced Multishuttle technology system at its logistics center. This new installation will support the company's contract to supply hospital centers under the Galician Health Service (SERGAS). The collaboration marks the first installation of Dematic's Multishuttle system in Spain and aims to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of medical supply logistics across the region.
Choosing Dematic’s Multishuttle Technology
Servicio Móvil selected Dematic's Multishuttle platform after a competitive tender process to identify the best technology on the market. The decision was driven by the platform's technological reliability, technical support, and the ability to meet specific storage, response times, and activity volume requirements. According to Manuel Muñoz, General Manager of Dematic Spain, "This agreement represents the first Multishuttle system installed in Spain, allowing us to demonstrate the operational savings and efficiency our system can deliver in healthcare logistics."
Details of the Multishuttle System
The installed system features a Captive Multishuttle with two aisles, 23 levels, and a 22,000-container rack in a double-depth configuration reaching 12 meters in height. It includes two high-performance picking stations and a BK10 conveyor system that connects the different modules of the installation. The system is managed by advanced automation software designed by Dematic.
The automation is expected to process over 500 orders per day, handling around 7,000 order lines and approximately 35,000 units of over 4,000 different items. This upgrade will centralize logistics services for hospitals and health centers, leading to estimated savings of more than 20 million euros annually, according to the President of the Xunta de Galicia, Alberto Núñez Feijóo.
Expanding Collaboration with AutoStore Systems
In addition to the Galician project, Dematic has recently completed another major installation for Servicio Móvil, featuring an AutoStore system in a warehouse near one of Madrid's largest hospitals. This facility was designed to meet the needs of a high-cost real estate environment, offering a compact solution that integrates energy-efficient robots and lights-out operation capabilities.
This ongoing collaboration reflects over a decade of partnership between Dematic and Servicio Móvil, dating back to 2012 when Servicio Móvil first adopted Dematic’s Multishuttle system at its Negreira site. Pablo Garcia, Dematic's Senior Director and Country Manager for Spain, notes, “By selecting Dematic for this new installation, Grupo Servicio Móvil recognized our ability to provide advanced solutions for their specific needs.”
Commitment to Healthcare Logistics Excellence
Servicio Móvil has built a reputation for high-quality standards and efficient service delivery in the healthcare sector, extending its expertise to governmental sectors and historical archives. For its healthcare operations, including the Madrid facility, the company required a system that could automate storage, retrieval, and sorting processes while improving picking accuracy and scalability for future growth.
Diego Rey, Director of Purchasing and Infrastructures at Servicio Móvil, emphasized the importance of operational efficiency and precision in healthcare logistics. “In today’s highly competitive market, having the best professionals on our team is not enough; we must also have the best automation solutions, which is where Dematic brings us value,” Rey stated. The collaboration between Servicio Móvil and Dematic exemplifies a shared commitment to enhancing logistics solutions tailored to the healthcare industry’s needs.
