GXO Expands Humanoid Robot Deployment to Two More U.S. Fulfillment Centers
HotNotes
  • GXO Logistics is expanding its deployment of Agility Robotics’ Digit humanoid robots to e-commerce fulfillment centers in Statesville, North Carolina, and Lebanon, Tennessee.
  • The multi-site expansion follows Digit surpassing 100,000 tote movements under a commercial Robots-as-a-Service (RaaS) agreement at GXO’s Flowery Branch, Georgia facility.
  • The new deployments will begin in early 2027 using the Digit 4 platform, with plans to transition to the newly unveiled, cooperatively safe Digit 5 model.
  • GXO Expands Humanoid Robot Deployment to Two More U.S. Fulfillment Centers

GXO Logistics is expanding its commercial deployment of humanoid robots to two additional U.S. fulfillment centers after Agility Robotics’ Digit robots surpassed 100,000 tote movements at an existing GXO operation in Georgia.

The expanded partnership with Agility Robotics will bring Digit humanoid robots to GXO Logistics facilities in Statesville, North Carolina, and Lebanon, Tennessee, beginning in early 2027.

The robots will support e-commerce fulfillment operations by taking on repetitive material-handling tasks, extending a partnership that began as a proof-of-concept in 2023 before becoming what the companies described as the logistics industry's first formal commercial deployment of humanoid robots.

For GXO Logistics, the move represents a significant step toward taking humanoid warehouse automation beyond a single facility and deploying the technology across multiple live customer operations.

From Warehouse Pilot to Multi-Site Deployment

GXO Logistics and Agility Robotics began testing Digit at GXO's Flowery Branch, Georgia facility in late 2023.

In June 2024, the companies expanded that relationship through a multi-year Robots-as-a-Service (RaaS) agreement, introducing Digit into an active warehouse operation alongside existing automation.

At the Georgia facility, Digit moves totes and places them onto conveyors as part of the warehouse workflow.

Since entering commercial operation, the robots have moved more than 100,000 totes.

That operating history provides GXO Logistics with the operational data needed to expand the technology into additional fulfillment centers.

“Together, we've helped pioneer the use of humanoid robotics in the warehouse and this expansion reflects our confidence in the technology's ability to create measurable value for our customers and a better working environment for our teams,” GXO Logistics CEO Patrick Kelleher said in the announcement.

North Carolina and Tennessee Deployments Coming in 2027

The next phase will bring Digit robots into GXO Logistics e-commerce fulfillment operations in Statesville, North Carolina, and Lebanon, Tennessee.

Deployments are scheduled to begin in early 2027 using Agility Robotics' Digit 4 platform.

The operations are expected to transition to the newer Digit 5 model once it becomes commercially available.

The robots will focus on highly repetitive material-handling work, similar to the workflows already being performed at GXO's Georgia operation.

Rather than attempting to automate an entire facility with humanoid robots, GXO Logistics is integrating them into specific workflows alongside conveyors and existing automated systems.

Digit Surpasses 65,000 Hours of Real-World Operation

Across Agility Robotics' commercial deployments and customer programs, Digit has accumulated more than 65,000 hours of real-world operating experience.

That operational data contributed to the development of Digit 5, the company's next-generation humanoid robot unveiled in late 2026.

Agility Robotics states the new version is engineered to work safely alongside human teams and support a broader range of industrial workflows.

The company's goal is to make humanoid robots flexible enough to operate in environments originally designed around human workers, eliminating the need for warehouses to rebuild workflows around specialized fixed automation.

That flexibility is particularly critical for 3PLs, where customer requirements, product profiles, and operating processes change frequently.

GXO Pushes Humanoid Robotics Toward Commercial Scale

For GXO Logistics, the new deployments fit into a broader strategy of testing emerging warehouse technologies in active operations before expanding them across its global network.

GXO Logistics operates more than 1,000 facilities totaling over 200 million square feet and employs more than 150,000 people globally.

That scale gives the company a substantial testing ground for robotics, artificial intelligence, and warehouse automation.

The expansion into North Carolina and Tennessee will provide another test of whether humanoid robots can move from individual deployments into repeatable technology that works across different warehouse environments.

Agility Robotics CEO Peggy Johnson noted that the expansion represents a shift in how enterprise customers approach humanoid automation.

“Customers are moving beyond asking whether humanoid robots can work to deciding where they can scale them,” Johnson said.

Agility Builds Infrastructure for Larger Robot Deployments

Agility Robotics is also building the manufacturing and software infrastructure needed to support larger commercial deployments.

The company operates RoboFab, a 70,000-square-foot humanoid robot manufacturing facility in Salem, Oregon.

Agility Robotics built the plant to support production of up to 10,000 robots annually.

The company also operates Agility Arc, a cloud-based platform used to manage fleets of Digit robots and integrate them with customer warehouse management systems.

Additional investments are being made in deployment, software, and service capabilities as Agility Robotics prepares for broader commercial adoption.

The company is also preparing to go public through a business combination with Churchill Capital Corp XI, planning to trade on the Nasdaq under the ticker AGLT.

A Significant Test for Humanoid Robots in 3PL Operations

Humanoid robotics has attracted substantial attention across logistics, but much of the technology has remained limited to pilot programs and lab demonstrations.

The GXO Logistics deployment stands out because Digit has operated under a commercial agreement inside an active fulfillment environment.

Crossing 100,000 tote movements and expanding into two additional facilities provides a practical baseline for evaluating whether humanoid robots can become standard warehouse infrastructure.

The technology presents a different approach to automation for 3PLs:

    • Traditional Automation: Requires fixed infrastructure, extensive installation, and workflows designed around specialized equipment.
    • Humanoid Robotics: Designed to work within existing facilities and workflows built for human workers without permanent structural modifications.

If the deployment proves scalable, it offers 3PLs an adaptable automation option for repetitive workflows across changing client accounts.

The next major operational test begins in early 2027 when Digit enters GXO's Statesville and Lebanon e-commerce fulfillment facilities.
