Maersk has announced the selection of Denmark’s second largest airport, Billund, as the hub for its Maersk Air Cargo operations. This move is set to create numerous jobs in the region and bolster Maersk’s presence in the air freight industry. The company also plans to formalize an agreement with the Flight Personnel Union (FPU), a part of the Danish Confederation and Trade Unions (FH).
Air freight plays a crucial role in enhancing the flexibility and agility of global supply chains, enabling businesses to address time-sensitive challenges and transport high-value cargo efficiently. Maersk is committed to expanding its air freight services to meet customer demands and enhance its integrated logistics offerings.
Aymeric Chandavoine, Global Head of Logistics and Services at A.P. Moller – Maersk, emphasized the importance of owned and controlled capacity through Maersk Air Cargo, aiming to make supply chain operations more resilient and responsive. Maersk Air Freight, as a standalone service, will complement the company’s ocean, inland, warehousing, and customs services, offering comprehensive supply chain solutions.
The new Maersk Air Cargo entity is built on the foundation of the existing Star Air operations, with a smooth transition supported by customers, suppliers, employees, and the Danish Civil Aviation Authority. This strategic shift will allow Maersk to offer a unique combination of air freight integrated with other transport modes, addressing the increasing demand for both air cargo and end-to-end logistics solutions.
Torben Bengtsson, Global Head of Air & LCL at A.P. Moller – Maersk, highlighted the company’s ambition to control a significant portion of its annual air tonnage through a mix of owned and leased aircraft. This model will mirror the structure of Maersk’s ocean fleet, with additional capacity provided by commercial carriers and charter operators.
Maersk Air Cargo will initially operate five aircraft from Billund: two new B777F and three leased B767-300 cargo planes. Additionally, three new B767-300 freighters will be deployed for the US-China route, managed initially by a third-party operator. The new aircraft are expected to be operational from the second half of 2022 through 2024.
Billund Airport is excited to host Maersk Air Cargo, anticipating significant growth for the West Danish business community. CEO Jan Hessellund expressed pride in Billund being chosen as Maersk's European air freight hub and looks forward to a fruitful partnership.
A.P. Moller - Maersk, a global leader in container logistics, operates in 130 countries with approximately 95,000 employees, striving to connect and simplify customer supply chains.
Billund Airport, Denmark's second largest, is a vital air freight gateway in northern Europe, supporting Danish companies with extensive route networks and business travel services.
