Regional hubs generally offer lower land and labour costs, reducing per-pallet storage and handling fees. Trade-offs include longer first-mile transport to metros and potentially less frequent carrier service. Model total landed cost: storage, handling, inbound drayage, outbound transit times and the value of faster replenishment or reduced returns.

Confirm presence of national carriers and scheduled regional services, access to intermodal rail terminals, local last-mile partners and cross-dock options. Verify transit frequency, cut-off windows, trailer types supported and the 3PL’s ability to consolidate lanes or provide palletised regional distribution.

Prioritise a WMS with real-time inventory visibility, API/EDI order connectivity, returns management, batch/kitting and multi-origin order routing. Evaluate pick strategies, packing quality controls, SLA reporting and the 3PL’s capacity to scale for promotions and seasonal peaks while maintaining omnichannel consistency.
