Prioritize proximity to major highways and rail terminals, on-site cross-dock capacity, availability of tractor/trailer parking, density of regional carriers and LTL connections, and ease of access to intermodal facilities to reduce empty miles and expedite inbound/outbound flows.

Require WMS with API/EDI connectivity, real-time inventory synchronization, event-driven tracking, and reporting dashboards. Confirm support for order routing, parcel carrier rate shopping, returns workflows, and integration with your ERP/OMS to reduce manual reconciliation and accelerate fulfillment cycles.

Negotiate base storage and pick/pack rates, indexed rate review clauses, clearly defined accessorial fees, minimum throughput commitments, SLA penalties, liability limits, and exit terms. Also review fuel surcharges, detention, and handling for atypical SKUs to avoid unforeseen charges.
