Map the 3PL’s existing carrier lanes and final-mile partners, request on-time delivery metrics, and review regional zone-skimming options. Consider multi-carrier capabilities, average transit times to key ZIP clusters, and the provider’s exceptions and claims handling processes.

Expect lower real estate and labor rates but weigh incremental transport spend to distant customers. Trade-offs include faster regional fulfillment vs. higher long-haul shipping for some lanes. Model total landed cost, inventory holding, and service-level impacts before committing.

Ensure API-level or EDI connectivity between your OMS/WMS and the 3PL. Track KPIs: order cycle time, perfect order rate, inventory accuracy, putaway and pick productivity, return rate, and carrier on-time percentage. Regular SLAs and operational reviews are critical.
