Choose a 3PL with multimodal access and regional consolidation hubs to shorten last-mile lanes. Optimize inventory placement across facilities, use zone-skipping where viable, and leverage carrier-negotiated rates from high-volume 3PLs to lower per-shipment costs and transit variability.

Require a modern WMS with API-based integration, real-time inventory visibility, EDI or marketplace connectors, and reporting dashboards. Verify support for barcode/RFID scanning, batch picking workflows, and order orchestration for splits, holds, and kitting.
