Best Logistics

Stockton, California, United States

Best Logistics, Inc. traces its origins to the San Francisco Bay Area where Bert Artlip, our founder, began his career as the foreman of operations for the Santa Fe Railroad in Northern California. In 1968, Bert was promoted to sales for the Santa Fe Trails, where he identified a strategic opportunity to backhaul imports from the Western US to the Midwest and East Coast. By consolidating these imports into trailers from the Port of San Francisco, Bert facilitated the first-ever TOFC (Trailer on Flat Car) movements under Custom’s house license #15, marking a significant milestone in intermodal transportation. In 1971, as the rail industry evolved, Bert adapted to new challenges by becoming a key operator for a local intermodal marketing company (IMC). Two years later, in 1973, Bert took a bold step and purchased his own trucking company in Berkeley, which ultimately led to the creation of Best Logistics, Inc. To better serve the expanding distribution needs of retail and manufacturing centers, the company relocated to the Central Valley, strategically positioning itself near major rail hubs and Interstate 5. In 2009, Best Logistics, Inc. further expanded its reach by establishing operations at the Port of Stockton. As long-term tenants of the Port, the company now serves a wide range of industries, including food, consumer goods, retail, industrial and building markets. Today, Best Logistics, Inc. is owned and operated by Bert’s son Greg, along with his wife Sharon and their children Jaclyn and Jeffrey. Together, they bring over 120 years of combined experience in the logistics industry. As they carry forward the family legacy, they remain dedicated to fostering innovation and providing outstanding service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Prioritize WMS/API/EDI integration, inventory accuracy and reporting, pick/pack throughput, SLA guarantees, returns handling, labor scalability, available racked capacity, and existing carrier contracts. Validate performance with KPIs (OTIF, pick accuracy, dock-to-ship time) and reference customers in similar channels and seasonal profiles.

Port proximity and intermodal connectivity shorten drayage for imports and provide alternatives to long-haul trucking. Direct highway corridors to major Northern California markets improve LTL routing and reduce transit variability, enabling more carrier mix options and lower average transit times to regional customers.

Evaluate lower rent and larger footprints in Stockton versus shorter last‑mile distances from Bay Area sites. Model total landed cost (rent, drayage, last‑mile transportation, inventory carrying) and consider peak labor availability and capex needs for automation when selecting location and partner.

Require a WMS with real‑time inventory visibility, API/EDI connectivity, robust returns-processing workflows, kitting and light assembly areas, quality inspection, and scalable labor plans. Also confirm reporting dashboards, SLA-based penalties, and contingency plans for peak surges and carrier disruptions.
