A distribution center typically moves large quantities of product between suppliers, manufacturers, and retailers; a fulfillment center picks, packs, and ships individual customer orders. A national apparel brand can use both: the distribution center receives seasonal inventory from factories and sends palletized replenishments to regional fulfillment centers. Location decisions vary. Distribution centers prioritize proximity to highways and intermodal yards for efficient freight consolidation. Fulfillment centers prioritize proximity to customer density and major parcel carrier hubs to reduce transit times and last-mile costs.
