Templates simplify training and speed up pallet builds. A template typically lists footprint, layer count, cases per layer, total cases, maximum gross weight, pattern name, and label placement. Use templates as printouts on the pack line or as digital pick face instructions in your WMS.


Common Build Patterns And When To Use Them


Choose a pattern based on product fragility, case dimensions, and handling context. Below are standard patterns used in fulfillment centers and distribution centers.


  • Column: Cases stacked one above another in straight columns. Best for uniform, sturdy cases; quick to build but less resistant to lateral movement.
  • Brick (Staggered): Alternating offsets layer-to-layer, improving lateral stability and load integrity—common for products moved frequently.
  • Pinwheel/Cross: Interlocks corners for greater rigidity—useful for lighter cases that need more lateral support during transit.
  • Mixed-SKU Layering: Layers contain multiple SKUs arranged by pick frequency or customer pallets; used in e-commerce or 3PL where split pallets are common.


Template Example: Standard Fulfillment Pallet


Template fields and a sample build for a typical 48" x 40" pallet used in U.S. fulfillment operations:


  • Footprint: 48" x 40" standard GMA pallet.
  • Pattern: Brick with alternating seams each layer.
  • Cases Per Layer: 10 (2 across x 5 deep).
  • Layers: 6 layers high.
  • Total Cases: 60 cases.
  • Max Height: 72" including pallet.
  • Gross Weight Limit: 1,800 lbs.
  • Label Placement: SSCC on long side, centered 6" from top edge.


How To Create And Implement Templates


Start by cataloging SKU dimensions and case strength. Run a few pilot builds to verify stability and forklift compatibility. Add templates to the WMS so when an order or replenishment is created, the system recommends the standard build. Train packers on reading build cards and use a visual checklist to confirm pattern and labels before staging.


  • Measure First: Record case length, width, height, and weight for each SKU before templating.
  • Pilot Builds: Physically test templates in staging to check stacking and shrink-wrap performance.
  • WMS Integration: Store template IDs in the SKU master so pickers see the right build on the mobile terminal.


Optimizing For Cube And Handling


Cube efficiency reduces freight cost but should not sacrifice stability. If a higher layer count saves space but creates a top-heavy pallet, re-evaluate the case pattern, add interlayer sheets, or reduce layer count. For mixed-SKU pallets, prioritize heavy items at the bottom and fragile ones on top, and use banding or corner boards as needed.


  • Heaviest First: Place heavier cases on the bottom layers to lower the center of gravity.
  • Interlayers: Use slip sheets or corrugated layers for smoother load distribution when required.
  • Protective Materials: Corner boards, stretch film, and strapping increase rigidity for taller builds.


In short, the Pallet Configuration template is a practical tool: it standardizes builds, reduces error, and helps fulfillment teams match customer and carrier requirements while optimizing space and protecting product. Keep templates concise, test them physically, and encode them into the WMS for consistent execution.
