Overview

Shrink and stretch wrapping are often mentioned together because both use plastic film to protect and stabilize products, but they operate by different mechanisms and suit different needs.


The key difference is mechanical: shrink film contracts when heat is applied; stretch film relies on elastic tension applied during wrapping. That fundamental distinction affects film choice, equipment, damage protection, and typical applications in warehouses and logistics operations.


How Each Method Works


Shrink wrapping uses films that have been orientation-stretched during manufacture. When reheated they pull tight to conform around shapes. Shrink wrapping often requires a heat source—a handheld gun, shrink tunnel, or infrared heaters. Stretch wrapping uses a highly elastic film (usually LLDPE) that is stretched mechanically as it's wrapped around a load; the film's elastic recovery clings to the load without heat.


Common Applications Compared


  • Shrink Wrapping: Retail multipacks, tray sealing, tamper-evident packaging, shrink hoods for weather protection, and shaped-packaging where a close, clear finish is desired.
  • Stretch Wrapping: Pallet unitizing, load containment for mixed-case pallets, and high-speed wrapping lines where maintaining load stability without heat is critical.


Performance Differences


Shrink wrapping provides a conformal, often tamper-evident finish that protects against dust and moisture. It offers excellent cosmetic presentation for retail products. However, it needs heat and careful temperature control; some products are heat-sensitive. Stretch film offers high puncture resistance, elongation, and cushioning—valuable for pallet loads with shifting forces during transport. Stretch wrapping is faster for palletizing and requires lower energy per wrap since no heating is necessary.


Equipment And Operational Considerations


  • Shrink Equipment: Handheld heat tools, L-bar sealers with tunnels, in-line shrink tunnels, and pallet hooding systems. Requires heat management and ventilation.
  • Stretch Equipment: Turntables, rotary arms, or semiautomatic and automatic stretch wrappers. Film pre-stretch systems reduce film use and increase load containment.


Cost And Throughput


Stretch wrapping tends to be lower cost per pallet and faster for high-volume pallet lines because it eliminates the heating step and can be fully automated with high cycle times. Shrink wrapping can have higher material costs depending on film type and may need more labor or capital for tunnels and hooding systems, but it adds value where presentation, tamper evidence, or complete enclosure is required.


When To Choose Shrink Over Stretch


  • Product Presentation: If a crystal-clear, tight package is needed for retail display, shrink wrapping wins.
  • Tamper Evidence: Shrink seals are more obvious if a pack has been opened.
  • Weather/Corrosion Protection: Hooded shrink covers for equipment and metal parts provide a close protective barrier after thermal shrink.


When Stretch Is Preferable


  • High-Volume Palletizing: Stretch is faster, cheaper, and provides the load-holding force needed for transport stability.
  • Heat-Sensitive Goods: Items that would be damaged by heat should avoid shrink tunnels.
  • Material Efficiency: Pre-stretch systems reduce film usage and lower packaging cost per pallet.


Practical Example


A food manufacturer ships 500 pallets per week. For palletized full-case loads the floor uses automatic stretch wrappers with 200% pre-stretch to save film and secure loads. Separately, the same plant uses polyolefin shrink film and a small tunnel to wrap retail multipacks destined for store shelves because shrink provides a neat, tamper-evident finish and allows consumers to inspect products through the clear film.


Tips For Choosing Between Them


  • Assess the Load: Consider shape, weight distribution, and whether close-fitting packaging or general containment is the goal.
  • Factor Throughput: Pallet volumes favor stretch automation; retail multipacks favor shrink for presentation.
  • Test Samples: Run field tests for damage rates, film consumption, and handling ergonomics before committing to a system.


In short, the Shrink Wrapping process is distinct from stretch wrapping: it uses heat to form a tight, protective, and often tamper-evident film around items. Choose shrink when presentation, enclosure, or weather protection is the priority; choose stretch for economical, high-speed pallet containment and load stability.
