  • SKU/Identifier: Internal stock-keeping units used by warehouses and retailers to track inventory at the SKU level.
  • UPC/Barcode: Universal Product Codes or EANs encoded as barcodes for retail scanning and POS reconciliation.
  • Size: Size designations such as S/M/L or numeric sizes printed on tags or labels for consumer selection and inventory segmentation.
  • Care Instructions: Washing, drying, ironing, and dry-clean guidance required by law in many markets and expected by consumers.
  • Country-Of-Origin: Where the garment was manufactured; often mandatory for imports and consumer transparency.
  • Retail Information: Price, brand, style number, and season code typically found on hangtags or price tags.


Common Label Types


Labels fall into three practical application categories: sewn-in (permanent), attached (removable hangtags), and applied to packaging (adhesive labels on polybags or boxes). Each has trade-offs between durability, cost, and point-of-use visibility. Sewn labels are durable and close to the skin; hangtags are visible on the sales floor but removable; adhesive labels are inexpensive and flexible for fulfillment operations.


Why It Matters


Proper labeling reduces returns, speeds receiving and picking, prevents mis-ships, and ensures legal compliance. In a warehouse, accurate SKU and UPC labels enable fast scan-and-ship workflows, help maintain inventory accuracy in the WMS, and reduce chargebacks from retailers for labeling mistakes. For the consumer, clear care and composition labels preserve product value and reduce damage from improper laundering.


How Labels Are Applied


Application methods vary by scale and product. Manual methods include sewing machines for permanent labels, handheld label guns and adhesive printers for hangtags and polybags, and heat presses or irons for heat-transfer labels. Automated options include label applicators for cartons and polybags, RFID encoding and in-line thermal printers on packing lines, and sew-in label stations tied into packing workflows. Integration with a WMS or inventory system ensures the right label template prints for each SKU and shipment.


Practical Example


A mid-size apparel brand receiving bulk shipments from a contract manufacturer might receive cartons labeled with PO and style information. Inside, garments are unpacked and passed through a labeling station where a seamstress sews in fiber content and care labels, a handheld printer applies UPC stickers to polybags, and hangtags are attached with plastic fasteners. Each packaged unit is scanned so the WMS confirms SKU, size, and carton-level data before being palletized and shipped to a retail distribution center.


Tips For Effective Labeling


  • Label Templates: Standardize templates for each SKU family to avoid misprints and ensure consistent placement and content.
  • Integration: Connect label printing to your WMS or ERP to auto-populate SKU, batch, and routing data and reduce manual entry errors.
  • Placement Rules: Define and document where each label type should appear (e.g., avoid covering care labels with adhesive stickers).
  • Quality Control: Implement final-scan checkpoints and photographic evidence for high-value orders to prevent mis-labels.
  • Supplier Specs: Provide clear labeling specifications to manufacturers to reduce rework on arrival.
