Who Performs Final Assembly


Final assembly can be done in-house by the manufacturer, at a contract manufacturer (CM), or at a third-party logistics provider (3PL) with light manufacturing capability. Small runs or configurable products may use manual assembly stations staffed by trained assemblers. High-volume products typically use automated conveyors, pick-and-place machines, and robotic fastening. Decision factors for selecting who performs final assembly include cost, quality control needs, intellectual property protection, lead time, and proximity to distribution channels.
