In manufacturing and distribution, raw materials are the inputs transformed by processes — cutting, molding, mixing, assembly — into components or completed products. They arrive at warehouses and plants in forms that range from unprocessed natural goods (timber, ores, cotton) to chemically refined inputs (resins, acids, alloy ingots) and semi-processed items (sheet metal, yarn).


Raw materials sit at the front end of the supply chain and determine a product’s cost base, quality, and regulatory requirements. Warehouse and logistics teams control their receipt, storage, inspection, and internal distribution to production lines or fulfillment centers. Accurate classification and handling influence lead times, yield, scrap rates, and traceability for recalls or quality audits.


Common Raw Material Categories


Raw materials are typically grouped by source and state of processing. The categories below are used by procurement, production planning, and warehouse operations.

How Raw Materials Are Specified


Specifications translate performance and quality expectations into measurable attributes. Typical specification elements include grade, tolerance, moisture content, purity, batch size, and acceptable blemish levels. Manufacturing uses bills of materials (BOMs) to map which raw materials (and quantities) are required per finished good.

The warehouse inspects each coil for certification, records coil weight and lot number into the WMS, stores coils in rack locations with forklift access, and schedules just-in-time deliveries to the press line. If a coil fails dimensional spec or has surface defects, it is quarantined and the supplier is notified; bad coils impact yield and create rework downstream.

  • Storage Conditions: Temperature, humidity, and segregation rules based on material type reduce spoilage and contamination.
  • Inventory Controls: Lot control, FIFO or FEFO (for perishables), and real-time WMS transactions maintain traceability and rotation.
  • Receiving Inspections: Documenting incoming quality and weights prevents production delays caused by substandard raw materials.
  • Handling Equipment: Specialized palletizing, drum handlers, or cradles for coils protect materials and workers.


Regulatory And Compliance Considerations


Certain raw materials trigger regulatory obligations: hazardous chemicals require compliance with OSHA, EPA, and local storage codes; imported raw materials may need customs documentation and duty classification; food and pharma inputs demand traceability, supplier audits, and certifications (e.g., FDA, GMP).

  • Label Early: Apply lot, PO, and inspection labels at receipt to avoid misidentification later.
  • Enforce Segregation: Keep incompatible materials apart and maintain clear aisle markings for hazardous storage.
  • Integrate Systems: Link procurement, WMS, and ERP for automated replenishment and BOM accuracy.
  • Measure Yield: Track scrap and yield by lot to surface supplier or process issues quickly.
