Heat causes the polymer to contract and conform tightly to the shape beneath it. That conformity provides several functional benefits: moisture and dust resistance, improved presentation, unitization of multiple items, and increased load stability during handling and transit.
How Shrink Film Works
Shrink film is manufactured with oriented polymer chains. When the film is stretched and cooled during production, the chains hold a programmed tension. Reheating allows the film to relax and retract toward its original, smaller profile. The degree of shrink (expressed as percentage) and shrink force depend on the polymer type and production orientation.

- Polyolefin: Clear, strong, food-safe, and forgiving to temperature variation—common for retail multipacks and produce trays.
- PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride): Historically common for shrink but less used now due to lower heat tolerance and environmental concerns; inexpensive and glossy.
- Polyethylene (LDPE/LLDPE): Thicker, tougher, and used for heavy-duty protective hoods and pallet shrink applications.

Mid-scale operations use L-bar sealers and in-line tunnels to handle cartons and trays at higher throughput. For pallet-level shrink, facilities employ hooding systems where a pre-made shrink hood is placed over a pallet and a tunnel or heat source shrinks the hood, or large shrink tunnels sized for full pallets.
Cost Considerations
Cost is driven by film type and gauge, machine capital, and labor. Thin polyolefin or PVC film is cheap per unit but has lower puncture resistance. Thicker LDPE hoods cost more but protect heavy or jagged loads. Automated hooding and shrink tunnels increase capital expense but reduce labor costs and improve consistency, which often pays back through reduced damage and faster throughput.
Environmental And Compliance Considerations
Recyclability varies by film chemistry and local recycling programs. Polyolefin and polyethylene films can be recyclable where facilities accept film plastics; PVC is less commonly recycled. Choosing mono-material films simplifies recycling. For food and medical items, select films certified for direct or indirect food contact. Also account for ventilation and heat-source safety in the plant to meet local fire and workplace regulations.
Practical Example
A mid-sized e-commerce warehouse ships hundreds of small electronics accessories daily. Workers place three related SKUs on a retail tray, pull a polyolefin shrink tube over the tray, and run it through a small heat tunnel at 2–3 units per minute. The result is a clear, tamper-evident pack that protects items from dust and allows barcode scanning at the distribution center without opening the pack.
