A SKU, or stock keeping unit, is the unique item number a company uses to identify a product. A blue water bottle in a 24-ounce size may be one SKU, while the same bottle in black may be another. A warehouse that regularly receives or ships full layers or full pallets of the same item will usually benefit.
They are also useful when compliance and traceability are important. If a product has a lot number, expiration date, country-of-origin requirement, or quality hold status, keeping it on a single-SKU pallet reduces confusion. This is why food, beverage, health, beauty, and regulated goods operations often prefer clean pallet identity.
Small-volume or slow-moving products may not always fit this approach. If a warehouse only has a few cases of many different SKUs, using one pallet per SKU may waste space. In those cases, mixed-SKU storage can still make sense, especially in shelving, carton flow, bins, or small-parts areas.
Tradeoffs To Consider
A single-SKU pallet is not automatically the best choice for every operation. The main tradeoff is space. If every low-volume SKU gets its own pallet position, storage density may suffer. Warehouses pay for floor space, rack space, labor, and equipment, so pallet strategy should match demand patterns.
Another tradeoff is outbound order structure. Some customers order mixed pallets because they need smaller quantities of many items. In that case, the warehouse may still store goods as single-SKU pallets in reserve, then build mixed outbound pallets during picking and packing. This keeps inbound and storage efficient while still meeting customer order requirements.

Later, when a retailer orders five pallets of that same beverage, the warehouse can pull five complete pallets and move them directly to outbound staging.
If those same 20 pallets were mixed with several flavors, sizes, or package counts, the process would take longer. Workers would need to identify which cases belong to which SKU, separate them, possibly rebuild pallets, and update inventory records. That extra handling may not sound large on one shipment, but across hundreds of inbound and outbound pallets per week, it can create meaningful labor cost and delay.
Tips For Using Single-SKU Pallets Well
To get the full benefit, the pallet should be labeled clearly on at least one visible side, and preferably on two adjacent sides. The label should identify the SKU, quantity, lot or date code if applicable, and pallet ID. Consistent label placement helps forklift drivers and receivers scan without turning the pallet around.
Standard pallet patterns also matter. Use consistent case orientation, layer count, tie-high, and wrap standards so the pallet remains stable in storage and transit. If the pallet will go to a retailer, confirm whether the customer requires specific height limits, pallet type, SSCC labels, or advance shipment notice data.
Finally, connect the physical pallet process to the WMS. A single-SKU pallet only improves efficiency if the system record is accurate. Scanning at receipt, putaway, replenishment, picking, staging, and shipping keeps the digital inventory aligned with the actual pallet on the floor.
