Assess the 3PL's direct carrier contracts, proximity to major ports and airports, average domestic truck lead times, frequency of sailings/air services, contingency routing options, and published carrier performance KPIs. Request lane-level transit-time reports and references for similar cargo profiles.

Many providers offer cold-chain, hazardous-material handling, and bonded warehousing. Validate compliance by reviewing certifications, temperature-mapping records, SOPs for segregation and handling, staff training logs, equipment maintenance schedules, insurance coverage, and by conducting on-site audits or third-party inspections.

Expect a mix of unit, per-pallet, and storage-day charges plus receiving, putaway, pick-and-pack, kitting, returns processing, and value-add fees. Also model pass-through costs (fuel, demurrage, duties), minimum monthly volumes, SLA penalties, onboarding/integration fees, and projected peak-season uplifts to compare total landed cost.
